About Us:
We are a US-based nonprofit organization providing innovative financial and business support services to micro and small enterprises operating in emerging markets outside the U.S. Our programs help entrepreneurs grow, access credit, and strengthen their businesses through technology and hands-on assistance.
We are developing a customer support platform that will allow our clients to access help, training, and financial tools through both desktop and mobile interfaces. We are looking for a UI/UX Design Intern who is passionate about user-centered design, social impact, and inclusive innovation.
Position Summary:
The UI/UX Design Intern will lead the user experience and interface design of a new Customer Support App for microenterprise clients. The app will sit on top of our existing program applications and integrate customer support, customer feedback, educational content, and mobile money payments into one seamless experience.
You will work closely with our program, technology, and communications teams to understand how small business clients interact with digital tools and translate those journeys into elegant, intuitive, and inclusive design solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct user journey mapping and develop wireframes, storyboards, and prototypes for desktop and mobile interfaces.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define and refine the customer support workflow and core user interactions.
- Design a visually engaging and accessible UI/UX system that can be customized from an existing theme or developed from scratch.
- Create high-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes for testing and feedback.
- Recommend best practices in responsive design and user accessibility across devices.
- Integrate user research insights from field teams to optimize the customer journey.
- Collaborate with developers to ensure design implementation aligns with UX intent.
- Participate in design reviews and team meetings.
Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Interaction Design, Human-Centered Design, Visual Communication, or a related field at a leading design school.
- Demonstrated experience with UI/UX design tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, InVision, etc).
- Ability to balance creativity with functionality — translating user needs into clear, intuitive digital experiences.
- Strong understanding of responsive and mobile-first design principles.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to present design ideas to non-technical audiences.
- Interest in inclusive design, financial inclusion, or social impact projects preferred.
- Portfolio showcasing UX case studies or design prototypes required.
Learning Outcomes:
- Gain real-world experience designing for international, multilingual audiences.
- Build a digital product from research to prototype in collaboration with a cross-functional team.
- Understand how design supports digital financial inclusion and small business development.
- Receive mentorship from professionals in impact investing, international development, and financial technology.
Compensation:
- Unpaid internship for academic credit.
- Opportunity to receive a letter of recommendation and portfolio endorsement upon successful completion.
