    Description

    The Development Director is part of an engaged work environment with feminist spirit and dedication to CWHC’s mission and the people it serves. This full-time, hybrid role works closely with CWHC’s Executive Director, Board of Directors, and Program Directors to guide the organization to long-term financial sustainability. The Development Director leads the Development team, which includes the Development Coordinator, Communications and Volunteer Coordinator, and Development interns.

    The Development Director develops and manages effective fundraising strategies through grant proposals, individual solicitation, special events, corporate support, and direct response solicitation.

    The ideal candidate is a highly motivated person who can work both collaboratively and independently to foster the growth of CWHC. They can think creatively and strategically about fundraising strategies while maintaining the Development Program’s high standard of attention to detail.

    Primary Responsibilities

    Fundraising: 50%

    • Grants management: Manage $500,000+ in annual grants with support from the Development Coordinator. Maintain effective grants management system, support content development and grant templates creation, ensure high quality and timely submissions, oversee grant writing and grant prospecting support staff.
    • Individual and Corporate Giving: In collaboration with the Executor Director, create and implement vision and plan for short- and long-term growth in individual and corporate giving.
    • Implement best practices related to individual donor management and stewardship and coordinate and participate in donor stewardship with Executive Director, Board Members, and other staff.
    • Ensure the maintenance of an accurate donor database, receive and acknowledge gifts, and manage donor pledges.
    • Produce and coordinate multiple appeal letters per year as well as online giving campaigns.
    • Special events: Serve as staff liaison for annual fundraisers, represent CWHC at events being held for its benefit, and oversee coordination of CWHC’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon team.

    Board Committee Liaison: 15%

    • Support CWHC’s Board Committee by attending regular full board meetings and subcommittee meetings, encouraging collaboration between board and staff, keeping board informed of CWHC’s activities, and coordinating recognition and stewardship of members.
    • In partnership with the Executive Director and Board Development Committee, coordinate Board orientation and board development processes.
    • Provide collaborative leadership to the Board Fundraising Committee.
    • Support Board fundraising efforts and serve as a primary staff liaison to Board fundraising events.

    Development Administration: 10%

    • Program Evaluation: Work closely with Program Directors to develop measurable program outcomes and indicators on an annual basis. Oversee the compilation, assessment, and distribution of program evaluation and demographic survey data.
    • Supervision: Provide supervision and oversight for Development Coordinator, Communications and Volunteer Coordinator, and 1-2 Development interns.
    • Create and manage annual development calendar.

    Development Communications: 10%

    • Materials development: Oversee creation of annual report as well as any other print or online materials to support fundraising efforts.
    • Plan and execute a wider-lens communication and social media strategy: manage social media or printed communications regarding programs, events, and campaigns; oversee support staff/volunteer supporting social media content.

    Financial Sustainability Planning: 10%

    • Create, oversee, and maintain fundraising budget and set annual fundraising goals with Executive Director and Development team.
    • Produce quarterly financial reports.
    • With Executive Director, explore longer-range (3-5 years) funding/business models to maximize earned income and mix of revenue sources.

    Collective Involvement: 5%

    • Participate as member of Directors Committee.
    • Join ad-hoc committees as needed (based on interest and/or skill set or position).
    • Review meeting minutes from all programs to stay informed about health center activities.
    • Provide feedback in the interest of improving health center services and culture.
    • Participate in annual budget assessment process.
    • Support CWHC through events attendance and community networking.
    • Attend, actively participate, and vote in Collective Meetings (typically 4 meetings per year).

    Qualifications

    • Minimum 3 years of experience in fundraising
    • Demonstrated excellence in solicitation of foundations, individual donors, and grant writing
    • Demonstrated success in information management and project management
    • Experience with donor software programs preferred
    • Experience with staff or intern supervision preferred
    • Budget planning and financial management experience a plus

    Skills

    • Ability and desire to manage and lead a plan for scaling up fundraising activities and impact
    • Excellent organizational skills and proven ability to manage multiple assignments with accuracy and attention to detail, as well as prioritizing and meeting deadlines
    • Excellent writing and editing skills, proven experience in crafting successful proposals and other donor correspondence is preferred
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills in a wide variety of contexts
    • Ability to work both independently with a minimum of supervision and effectively in a team environment
    • Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and constituent database
    • Understanding and interest in participating as a leader in a modified collective structure

    The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $65,000; the position is 40-hours per week. Two to three workdays per week may be done remotely as arranged with the Executive Directors and Development team. The person in this position will be considered a full-time collective member of CWHC.
