Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and serving as Treasurer to the Board of Directors, the Director of Finance is a key member of the Executive Team, playing a critical role in advancing the organization’s mission and long-term sustainability.

The Director will oversee all financial activities, including planning, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, internal controls, contracts, audit preparation, and risk management. This leader will bring strategic financial insight, collaborative leadership, and operational excellence to ensure Mural Arts’ fiscal health and growth.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conduct rigorous financial analysis to evaluate the organization's financial position and recommend strategies for growth, cost control, and revenue enhancement.
    • Provide accurate and timely financial reports to the Executive Team and Board of Directors, including financial dashboards and narrative summaries.
    • Serve as the primary financial liaison at Executive, Finance, and Audit Committee meetings.
    • Oversee financial compliance with all grants, contracts, and government regulations, ensuring efficient grant and contract reporting.
    • Supervise and mentor a finance team of 4 staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional development.
    • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure the integrity of restricted vs. unrestricted funds management.
    • Oversee organizational insurance coverages, risk management strategies, and employee benefits in partnership with the COO.
    • Manage banking relationships, cash flow planning, and ensure fraud protections are in place.
    • Oversee capital projects and IT department operations (in partnership with outsourced IT support).
    • Build financial literacy across departments to support program and operational success.
    • Lead the annual audit process, preparation of IRS Form 990, and compliance with GAAP standards.
    • Support new business initiatives by developing financial models and projections for prospective programs.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or Master’s degree strongly preferred.
    • Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial management experience, preferably within a non-profit organization.
    • Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP for nonprofits, OMB Circulars, and federal grant compliance.
    • Demonstrated experience overseeing financial operations for budgets of $7M+.
    • Skilled in financial analysis, forecasting, and scenario planning.
    • Strong leadership, supervisory, and team-building abilities.
    • Exceptional communication skills; able to translate complex financial information for non-financial audiences.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Sage and Salesforce preferred.
    • High integrity, ethics, and commitment to transparency.
    • Collaborative spirit with a client-service orientation and proactive approach to solving problems.
