    Description

    About Us

Opportunity@Work is a national nonprofit based in Washington, DC (1 block from Farragut North metro station), dedicated to expanding access to career opportunities for workers who are Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs)—such as community college, military, training programs, or on-the-job learning.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Paralegal & Office Support Contractor to join our Finance and Operations team in a contract capacity, though this has the potential to transition to a full-time role with increased responsibilities over time. This role is an excellent opportunity for an experienced paralegal who is eager to gain hands-on experience with contracts, nonprofit operations, and special projects, while contributing to a mission-driven organization.

    About the role

This is a 1099 contract position (approx. 30 hours/week). Generally, this will be broken out as follows:

    • 60-80% Contract review/paralegal support (largely contract procurement)
    • 10-20% Office management & administrative support
    • 0-20% Special projects (as time allows)

This position offers exposure to nonprofit contracting, grants, and operations in a national mission-driven organization. It’s a great stepping stone for:

    • Experienced paralegals seeking a career in a nonprofit operation;
    • Professionals looking for meaningful legal and organizational experience in a mission-driven environment, a stepping stone, or
    • Community college graduates considering a BA and potentially law school.

You’ll also gain access to mentorship from dedicated leaders and exposure to innovative nonprofit programming, building skills, and relationships that can shape your career path.

    What you'll do

    • Review, edit, and track contracts with a focus on procurement and compliance.
    • Support the team that manages contracts for donations, grants, fee-for-service, and membership agreements.
    • Coordinate with finance, IT, and other teams on day-to-day operational needs.
    • Manage office supplies, kitchen inventory, mail distribution, and vendor coordination.
    • Provide light office support and trouble-shooting office needs as necessary (liaising with the property manager, cleaners, assigning key fobs, tech equipment requests, etc.).
    • Assist with special projects and organizational initiatives as needed and as time allows, given other responsibilities.

    Qualifications

    • 3+ years of paralegal experience (contractual procurement focus strongly preferred).
    • Associate’s degree welcome but not required - we prioritize hands-on experience and are open to receiving applications from all backgrounds/levels of experience.
    • Strong organizational and communication skills.
    • Comfort working in a hybrid nonprofit office setting.
    • Passion for O@W mission.

    Contract Details

    • ~30 hours/week (hybrid: in-person 3 days/week for approximately 4 hours each day; precise schedule is flexible).
    • Initial contract term: 12 months, with the possibility of extension or transition to full-time employment.
    • Compensation: $40-$42/hour (1099 contractor role).
    • Additional Transportation Reimbursement: $240/month at end of each month with a receipt.
