    Description

    The Director of Education is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for developing and implementing dynamic, inclusive, and impactful educational programs that reflect the contemporary and historical legacy of Weeksville. This individual will lead the institution’s overall education strategy, oversee engagement with schools and community organizations, and ensure that education programs and initiatives align with the organization’s mission. This position will actively create the structure, content and direction of education focused work at Weeksville. The Director of Education will collaborate with public programs, operations, and development teams to integrate education across the institution.

    Primary Responsibilities

    Program Building and Leadership

    • Design and manage educational programs for K–12 students, educators, and families.
    • Develop curriculum materials and other educational resources that expand the reach of the institution especially in the creation of in school and afterschool programs for youth
    • Lead the development and delivery of historic house tours, workshops, lectures, and special events
    • Work with programs department and collections department to create interpretive experiences
    • Cultivate partnerships with New York City public schools, independent schools, charter schools, community organizations, and academic institutions
    • Represent the institution in educational and cultural networks at the city and national levels

    Staff Management and Administration

    • Supervise education department staff: tour educators, support staff and consultants
    • Work with the Development Department and Finance Department to create and manage departmental budgets and grant deliverables

    Evaluation and Impact

    • Use date collection methods and report findings to assess program outcomes and impact
    • Monitor and report program attendance and reach

    Benefits

    This is a full-time exempt position with a salary range of $90,000 - $95,000 annually. Weeksville Heritage Center offers a benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance; a retirement plan that employees can contribute to after the eligibility period, and paid vacation, paid sick leave, and personal days with the option for a hybrid work schedule.

    Level of Language Proficiency

    • Master’s degree in education, Museum Education, African American Studies, Public History, Anthropology or a related field.
    • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in education, preferably in a museum or cultural institution setting.
    • Deep knowledge of African American history and Brooklyn history
    • Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills
    • Experience working with diverse audiences
    • Familiarity with New York City education standards and networks
    • Ability to work collaboratively between departments and with a diverse range of individuals, partners and organizations
    • Availability to work on scheduled evenings and weekends
