    Description

    The Sex Workers Project (SWP) of the Urban Justice Center provides free immigration legal services to people ages 18 and up who are current or former sex workers, trafficking survivors, or profiled as sex workers. Our legal team members are leading national experts on the intersections of sex work criminalization and federal immigration law in the United States.

    SWP offers full and limited representation for deportation defense, immigration screenings, consultations, and representation on immigration cases before U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services.

    SWP is seeking a highly motivated problem-­solver committed to advancing the rights of immigrant sex workers and survivors of trafficking for an immigration staff attorney position.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Represent clients in humanitarian immigration cases before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR); including but not limited to removal defense, asylum, T/U visas, VAWA, adjustment of status, naturalization, etc;
    • Conduct immigration legal intakes and screenings;
    • Staff outreach clinics, provide Know Your Rights education, and assist with immigration legal trainings.

    Qualifications

    • J.D. Degree and admission to any U.S. state bar;
    • 1-4 years of immigration law experience;
    • Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred;
    • Strong written and oral communication skills;
    • Aptitude for holistic, client-centered advocacy;
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills, including flexibility and the ability to work in a fast-changing legal landscape;
    • An understanding of how to work with impacted communities using trauma-informed and anti-oppressive practices or willingness to learn and incorporate such practices in your work;
    • A demonstrated ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures, as well as sensitivity to and knowledge of the various dimensions of diversity, including gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, age, disability, and socioeconomic status.

    Compensation and Benefits

    A starting salary of $74,000-$78,529 depending on years of experience and excellent benefits package are offered, with generous vacation, personal, and sick time, along with industry-leading medical and dental coverage. This is a bargaining unit position represented for collective bargaining purposes by the Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys - UAW Local 2325. Subject to work needs, the Sex Workers Project also offers flexible hours and hybrid work options.
