    Position Title: Community Organizer

    Reports To: Program Director

    FLSA Classification: Non - exempt

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Black and Brown Coalition for Educational Equity and Excellence is seeking a dynamic, community organizer to help us recruit, train, and mobilize Black and Brown youth and families to advocate for systemic change within Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS’) in three key areas:

    1) Increase proficiency in literacy and math and close achievement gaps;

    2) Increase school safety and reduce disproportionality in discipline; and

    3) Increase MCPS’ ability to effectively communicate, include, and engage Black and Brown youth and families in key decisions affecting students’ education.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Works closely with the Program Director, Program Coordinator, and Executive Assistant to help articulate an implementation plan to conduct outreach to 200 Black and Brown stakeholders (youth/families/caregivers/community members) and provide training to 40 Black and Brown leaders to act to further systemic change within MCPS regarding our three focus areas.
    2. Works closely with Program Coordinator to implement action plan to meet contractual targets.
    3. Nurtures, sustains, and creates partnerships with key County stakeholders and organizations whose mission is to improve the lives of Black and Brown youth and families. 4. Assists in organizing and executing an annual forum and regular learning sessions to appraise the community about the Coalition’s advocacy agenda and progress made on target focus areas.
    4. Participates in member, community, and MCPS meetings and events on some evenings and weekends, as needed.
    5. Assists Executive Assistant in creating social media messages and WhatsApp reminders for leaders and members relevant to important county/district information, deadlines, and opportunities for civic engagement.
    6. Participates in weekly check-in meetings with Program Director, Program Coordinator, and Executive Assistant to keep them informed of progress and participants’ needs.
    7. Uses Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) Database to maintain clear records and data on client interactions, services, and referrals. Maintains organized and up-to-date client electronic files with supporting documentation.
    8. Represents the BBC by attending and actively participating in required training, meetings, and presentations.
    9. Performs other duties as assigned, required, or needed
    10. Supports the Coalition’s mission and values. Continually looks for ways to improve the organization and works in alignment with Identity’s strategic goals. Brings best self to the workplace and shares ideas and suggestions.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Be an excellent communicator—oral and written- and able to connect with various audiences and stakeholders.
    • Fluent in the use of Microsoft 365 (SharePoint, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), Adobe, Canva, and Zoom.

    Have daily access to a car, a valid driver’s license, valid car insurance, and clean driving record.

    • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and be able to pass a fingerprinting and background check.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • Must have an associate’s degree (2 years of community college) or a bachelor's Degree.
    • Must be able to pass a federal background check, including criminal background check, and Child Protective Services background check.
    • Have a minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in community or grassroots organizing, family engagement, or student organizing for systemic or local change.

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Maintains composure, patience, and self-confidence.
    • Works collaboratively with diverse clients and staff.
    • Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with others while upholding strong client orientation. ● Has a strong code of ethics and integrity and fulfills obligations.
    • Ability to speak and write fluently English and French, Amharic, or Spanish is a plus.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • This position is a hybrid position with 60% in the office or in the field, and 40% working remotely.
    • Open work area with some noise and foot traffic, and controlled air temperature.
    • The ability to lift and move up to 25lbs.
    • Must be able to work a flexible work week including evenings and weekends
