    Description

    The Asiyah Women’s Center is the first women’s domestic violence emergency center in New York City to address the gap of appropriate residential services for the Arab, Middle-Eastern, Muslim, South Asian (AMEMSA) and/or the Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) population. Our mission is to provide temporary housing for victims of domestic violence and women facing eviction, and/or homelessness. By connecting under-resourced women in our community to job opportunities, a range of mental health and medical services, permanent housing facilities, health insurance and legal assistance, we hope to empower women to get back on their feet and overcome their deeply traumatic personal circumstances.

    The Asiyah Women’s Center is seeking a full-time social worker to provide critical trauma-informed care to women survivors of domestic violence and homelessness in our safe housing program. The Social Worker for the Asiyah Women’s Center will be a key member of staff to provide a safe haven for women survivors of domestic violence. This position is in person, with preference to those that live in Brooklyn, and requires afternoons and evenings.

    Responsibilities

    • Welcomes new residents to the home and supports adjustment to the daily routine of the Center
    • Processes referrals and conducts intakes for potential residents
    • Conducts trauma-informed counseling services, safety planning, support groups, workshops and field trips for residents
    • Works closely with case worker, program manager, and volunteers to coordinate services for residents
    • Provides crisis intervention support to residents during overnight on-call shifts per week if needed
    • Coordinates referrals for services with partner agencies
    • Maintains timely and accurate documentation of services
    • Reports to Executive Director
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • LMSW required
    • Prior experience working with trauma victims required
    • Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles, confidentiality expectations, and familiarity with issues related to domestic violence and its impact on individuals and families is required.
    • Experience working in a domestic violence shelter or related field is strongly desired.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Proficiency in computer applications and electronic record-keeping systems.
    • Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter, work independently, and within a team
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and listening skills
    • Demonstrated success with community relationship building
    • Availability to work weekend days or evenings as needed
    • Strong preference for an active NYS driver's license and vehicle
    • Bilingual English/Arabic/Urdu/Bangla preferred
