    Position Overview

    Zone 126 is seeking to hire an Academic Group Leader at Long Island City High School responsible for providing academic support to a cohort of students through homework help and enrichment activities that support their individual learning and social emotional growth.

    Activities include academic support in subjects like math, English, science, social studies, and/or foreign language to ensure students are mastering day school content outside of the classroom. Enrichment activities that foster creativity such as crafting, media, entertainment, volunteerism, gaming, and English language mastery.

    The Academic Group Leader reports to the Director of Afterschool Program and will play a key role in recruiting and mentoring students to keep them engaged in afterschool and other Zone 126 programs and services.

    Essential Responsibilities

    • Implement and develop lessons and activities aligned with program goals to support the academic success and the social/emotional development of students.
    • Collaborate with Director of Afterschool Program in the planning, development and execution of quality, age-appropriate youth development activities.
    • Create and distribute materials during lunchtime outreach to stimulate interest in afterschool programs (September through November-while program is being launched).
    • Develop and maintain positive and professional relationships with students, families & school faculty.
    • Quickly identify and seek to resolve conflicts in consultation with the Director of Afterschool Program.
    • Plan and post activity schedules and work products in designated areas to expand afterschool program exposure to the school community.
    • Report incidents to Director of Afterschool Program in a timely manner to ensure student safety within and outside of the program period.
    • Engage students in specialty area activities and assist with coordinating special culminating events, such as showcases, exhibits, productions, etc. with the Director of Afterschool Program.
    • Keep inventory and maintain all program supplies and equipment in an organized, safe, and secure location for your cohort of students.
    • Coordinate with Director of Afterschool Program to ensure supplies are readily available to facilitate positive student experience.
    • Provide support through encouragement and promoting additional resources and referrals that are a part of the Zone 126 suite of services.
    • Prepare periodic reports and materials that show participant engagement and progress.
    • Maintain accurate attendance records and complete administrative responsibilities as required.
    • Timely submit all program related documents.
    • Perform other related duties as needed.

    Qualifications

    • H.S. diploma required. College students are highly encouraged to apply.
    • Experience working with youth; middle school or high school students preferred.
    • Bilingual Spanish or Bengali a plus.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
    • The ideal candidate is personable and has an aptitude for motivating people.
    • Ability to speak professionally to staff members, parents, students, and various community partners.
    • Ability to plan and carry out assignments independently.
    • Ability to lift 25 pounds occasionally to assist with program activities & setup.
    • DOE Fingerprinting Clearance is required for all school-based staff. Fingerprinting costs are reimbursable after 90 days of successful employment.

    Work Location and Schedule

    • School-based role based at Long Island City High School.
    • Part-time role, a minimum of 16 hours per week.
    • Candidates must be available between Monday through Friday between 10am to 3pm or 12pm and 5 pm.
    • Before and after-school hours, weekends, and special event support will be planned.

    Salary and Benefits

    • Hourly Rate Range $18.75
