    Description

Location: Remote or Oakland, CA preferred

    Start Date: Immediate

Amazon Watch is a dynamic nonprofit organization working to protect and defend the Amazon rainforest and our climate in partnership and solidarity with Indigenous Peoples and the climate justice movement.

The Amazon has reached an ecological tipping point due to increased deforestation and degradation. To reverse this, we must protect 80% of the Amazon, including 100% of Indigenous territories. Amazon Watch works directly with Indigenous and forest communities, along with international allies, to hold governments, corporations, and financial institutions accountable for Amazon destruction and human rights violations.

We are seeking an experienced Media Consultant for a short-term, three-month contract to lead high-priority media relations work and provide backup support for social media and multimedia content generation. This consultant will play a key role in framing Amazon Watch’s issues for international, national, and regional press, pitching stories, and securing coverage that advances our campaigns.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Cultivate and manage media relationships with targeted outlets and journalists in strategic markets (national and international).
    • Proactively pitch stories, op-eds, and interviews that elevate Amazon Watch’s campaigns, partners, and spokespeople.
    • Respond to media requests and coordinate interviews for Amazon Watch staff and Indigenous leaders.
    • Draft and edit press releases, media advisories, talking points, and op-eds.
    • Monitor media coverage on core issues and campaign targets; prepare media tracking reports.
    • Maintain and update the media contact database.

    Backup Support Responsibilities

    • Support the social media team with timely posting and amplification of media coverage.
    • Assist in developing and editing multimedia content (short videos, graphics) to support campaigns.
    • Collaborate with the comms team to turn press coverage and story angles into content suitable for social media and digital channels.
    • Ensure messaging consistency across media, social, and multimedia channels.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum three years of experience in media relations, journalism, or public relations, preferably with an NGO or advocacy organization.
    • Demonstrated success in securing media coverage and cultivating journalist relationships.
    • Strong writing and editing skills; ability to work under tight deadlines.
    • Familiarity with international media landscapes and climate justice issues.
    • English fluency required; Spanish and/or Portuguese highly desirable.
    • Experience with social media platforms and basic multimedia content production is a plus.
