    Position Summary

    The Fair Financial Services Policy Analyst will work with the Fair Financial Services Project Director to pursue advocacy, research, and coalition-building strategies that advance Texas Appleseed's mission to change unjust laws and policies in support of fairness in lending practices, consumer protection, and financial well-being for Texans.

    Roles & Responsibilities

    • Advocating for reforms and policy changes around fair financial services, including encouraging a fair market for consumer credit, addressing coerced debt and debt collection abuses, supporting fair insurance pricing, and exploring policies at the intersection of data privacy and consumer protection.
    • Conducting rigorous policy research and drafting memoranda, comment letters, fact sheets, reports, and other materials.
    • Reviewing and providing analysis on existing and proposed legislation, legal opinions and briefs, rulings from the Attorney General and the courts, etc.
    • Managing open records requests and interpreting data and the impacts of policy on outcomes.
    • Developing and coordinating advocacy strategies and efforts with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Speaking at public hearings and to the media.
    • Presenting to and educating various stakeholders and the public regarding our advocacy efforts.
    • Maintaining relationships with partner organizations and building relationships with affected youth and families.
    • Performing other duties as assigned

    Candidate Qualifications

    • Knowledge of and passion for economic, racial, and social justice issues.
    • Law degree and/or master’s level degree preferred.
    • Legal or public policy experience.
    • Experience in conducting and using data analysis.
    • Must have strong attention to detail, excellent oral and written communications skills, and ability to manage multiple projects.
    • Experience working alongside systems-impacted individuals.
    • Digital proficiency in the Google Suite, Zoom, and Microsoft Office.
    • The ability to manage and juggle various tasks and deadlines and the flexibility to handle the demands of Texas legislative sessions, including late night and early hearings and unpredictable schedules.

    Background Information

    Reports to the Director of the Fair Financial Services Project. This is a full-time position at 40 hours a week. Some, mostly in-state, travel required. Texas Appleseed’s office hours are from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. each weekday. The position is an immediate opening until filled.
