    Description

    The Opportunity

    The next Executive Director (ED) of the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) will lead a non-partisan organization that is dedicated to creating transparency in Virginia politics and government and advancing civics education, all towards the goal of maintaining a healthy democracy. VPAP is the premier source for information on the financing of Virginia political campaigns and Virginia elections. Guided by our mission of elevating public understanding, we take complicated financial and electoral data and make it easy to access without partisan bias.

    The ED will work with VPAP's Board of Directors, staff of 10 and budget of $1.6M to broaden VPAP's impact by reaching new constituencies, strengthening its fundraising capacity and expanding its service offerings. The ED represents VPAP in the statewide community, nurturing existing partnerships and developing new ones that support its mission. A general understanding of Virginia's elections and transparency laws is preferred and a willingness to increase that knowledge is essential.     Key Priorities and Responsibilities:

    Leadership

    • In conjunction with the Board and staff, identify and implement strategies that enable VPAP to sustain and expand its important role in Virginia's political life.
    • Protect and promote the VPAP brand and its reputation for integrity and nonpartisanship.
    • Determine the appropriate organizational structure to support any future initiatives, as they are considered.
    • Oversee operations and provide staff with opportunities for professional growth, especially in ways that also strengthen VPAP.

    Community Facing

    • Lead the development of a strong and diversified organizational fundraising system to ensure adequate financial resources.
    • Serve as the outward face and primary spokesperson for VPAP.
    • Strategically expand VPAP's diverse constituencies and increase usage of the information it provides.
    • Develop relationships with organizations and people who are important to VPAP's success.

    Board Relationships

    • Serve as the primary liaison with the Board, ensure committees are staffed appropriately, and provide information to the Board in a timely manner.
    • Develop strong relationships with Board members and draw on the Board's strengths to support the organization.
    • Work with the Board to cultivate potential Board members for upcoming classes.
    • Gain an understanding of the Board's priorities and communication preferences.

    Finance and Administration

    • Ensure that VPAP remains financially stable.
    • Oversee the development and implementation of budget.
    • Attract and retain a talented and diverse hybrid staff.
    • Ensure that procedures are in place to meet legal requirements and enable the organization to function efficiently.
    • Explore ways to increase revenue streams in a manner that does not impair VPAP's brand or integrity.

    Key Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Minimum bachelor's degree.
    • Minimum seven years of proven non-profit leadership experience.
    • Minimum five years of recently demonstrated ability in fundraising and fundraising management.
    • Combination of experience and education will be considered in lieu of these requirements.
    • Experience successfully managing a budget.
    • Must have unwavering commitment to making nonpartisan, Virginia political information accessible to increase civic engagement.
    • Ability to develop strong relationships with a range of shareholders and constituencies.
    • Unquestionable integrity and ability to build trust.
    • Ability to analyze and expand VPAP's constituencies.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Excellent critical thinking skills.
    • A sense of what types of information and stories are of interest to constituencies.
    • Experience in team management, especially within a hybrid workplace.
    • Promotes and adheres to the organization's mission, vision and values, policies, and applicable laws in a fair and equitable manner.
    • Maintain current Virginia driver's license and clear DMV record.
    • Successfully complete pre-employment background screening.

    Competitive Salary & Benefits Package including 100% health and dental coverage with 25% for each dependent, PTO of 20 days per year, and 4% retirement match. Hybrid work location. The salary range is about $140,000-$160,000 depending upon related credentials and work experience.
