    The Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless – a D.C.-based, locally-focused legal services and advocacy organization – seeks to hire a member of our Communications and Development team—Assistant or Coordinator, depending on experience-- who shares our vision for a District of Columbia in which housing is a human right, racial justice is a reality, and all people have true and meaningful access to the resources needed to thrive.

    The Legal Clinic’s mission is to achieve justice for our neighbors experiencing the injustice of homelessness and poverty. Rooted in a client-centered framework, we utilize a community lawyering approach to provide low-barrier and comprehensive legal services. We seek systemic reform through zealous advocacy for public policies that reflect community needs, affirm racial justice, improve housing security, and expand the social safety net for people experiencing crises.

    The Communications and Development team member will work closely with the Legal Clinic’s Director of Communications and Development and Executive Director to support the organization’s fundraising efforts and donor stewardship, as well as creative and strategic communications efforts to raise the profile of the Legal Clinic and its work and expand our network of supporters. Primary activities will include:

    • tracking donations and donor information,
    • preparing and generating reports for revenue tracking, grant reports and mailings,
    • liaising with the Finance and Administration Manager in areas where the organization’s accounting and development data intersect,
    • researching and compiling relevant updated data on poverty, homelessness, and housing,
    • preparing content for the Legal Clinic’s communications needs,
    • helping create development and communications plans, deadlines, and strategies for the year,
    • researching prospective funders, and
    • creating written and graphic design content for website and social media in support of the organization’s work.

    This role reports directly to the Director of Communications and Development.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Required

    • experience with social media and creating compelling narratives,
    • direct experience with fundraising/development at a nonprofit or similar organization,
    • experience with CRMs/databases, data entry, and/or client data management,
    • intermediate experience with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel,
    • an interest/passion to create fundraising strategy and creative approaches to donor stewardship,
    • excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and
    • a commitment to social justice, racial justice, and housing justice

    Preferred

    An outstanding candidate will also have

    • experience with Every Action
    • experience with Canva and/or WordPress
    • experience with Instrumentl or other grant prospecting system
    • experience coordinating an organization’s social media
    • an excellent customer service approach
    • a keen eye for detail
    • experience working as part of a team
    • a recognition of the importance of “back office” operations

    The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a small, non-profit environment, both independently and as part of a team.

    Working Conditions:The Legal Clinic is currently operating on a hybrid work schedule. While there is flexibility to work from home periodically, due to the job duties, this position will be expected to work from the Legal Clinic’s office in northwest D.C. on a regular basis. (Note: the hybrid work schedule is subject to change depending on public health and other factors.)

    Salary and Benefits: Salary is between $58,000 and $83,000 based on experience. The Legal Clinic offers excellent benefits including 100% paid health, dental, and vision plans for employees and their families as well as employer retirement contributions. In addition, generous time off including two-weeks of vacation (increasing over time) plus the last week of the year, three days at Thanksgiving, Emancipation Day, and all federal holidays. After five years, employees are eligible for 90 days of paid sabbatical leave.
