    GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION

    Books & Buckets seeks a passionate and experienced coach to lead our Elevating Girls and Women in Sports initiative, a basketball-based youth development program that combines athletic skill-building, social-emotional learning, and community leadership training. The Coach will play a vital role in expanding our programming to four Title I schools in Long Beach, engaging underserved youth (particularly girls, LGBTQ+ youth, and youth of color), and fostering a safe, inclusive, and empowering sports environment.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Program Delivery
      • Lead basketball skills training sessions and practice plans that emphasize fundamentals, teamwork, and fun.
      • Integrate social-emotional learning, leadership development, and community values into practices.
      • Expose youth to additional sports (e.g., volleyball, dance, or non-traditional recreational play) as part of cross-training and exploration.
    • Equity & Inclusion
      • Recruit, mentor, and retain female athletes and LGBTQ+ participants through referrals and grassroots strategies.
      • Support the recruitment and training of female coaches and volunteers.
      • Receive NFHS or USA Basketball Coaching Certification and facilitate the certification of other female coaches.
      • Ensure programming creates a culture of belonging for all youth.
    • Partnerships & School Engagement
      • Collaborate with four partner Title I schools to deliver on-site programming.
      • Maintain strong relationships with school administrators, teachers, and community partners.
    • Coaching Education
      • Participate in ongoing professional development, trauma-informed coaching, and LA84’s Community of Practice.
    • Safety & Compliance
      • Ensure health and safety standards are maintained at all times.
      • Follow LA84 sport-specific guidelines for youth safety.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

    • 2+ years coaching youth basketball or sports-based youth development programs.
    • Lived experience and/or deep connection to Long Beach communities strongly preferred.
    • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and youth empowerment.
    • Strong communication and mentorship skills.
    • Ability to manage small groups (up to 15 youth) and work across multiple sites.
    • Current CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain).
    • Must be willing to work weekends and evenings.
