    Description

Promote the Vote is a coalition of more than a dozen leading partner organizations who are dedicated to ensuring that Michigan’s voting system works for all. From voter education and engagement, to election protection, to legislative advocacy, our coalition effectively cuts through the partisan noise to advance voting rights for the people of Michigan.

We have drafted and worked with partners to pass two transformative pro-voter ballot initiatives, have equipped hundreds of thousands of voters with timely, accessible, multilingual voting-related resources, have co-led Michigan’s statewide nonpartisan Election Protection Programs, and have drafted, workshopped and advocated for dozens of pro-voter bills. In the years that PTV has been active, Michigan has gone from being one of the lowest-ranking states in terms of ballot access to a recognized leader in election security and accessibility.

We are seeking a smart, dedicated, and hardworking Communications Director to join our highly-effective team of lawyers, policy experts, advocates, organizers, and communicators. The Communications Director will create and execute the communications strategy behind PTV’s programmatic work and will build and engage a strong supporter base to amplify our advocacy and ensure that our pro-voter message reaches diverse and targeted audiences.

The Communications Director will primarily report to PTV’s Election Protection Director. The Communications Director’s key responsibilities will be to:

    • Develop and execute a comprehensive, evidence-based communications strategy to support and advance PTV’s efforts to protect and defend the right to vote in Michigan.
    • Develop and assess the efficacy of key messages and talking points to ensure that our pro-voter messages are reaching both diverse and targeted audiences.
    • Develop and manage PTV’s comprehensive editorial calendar for website content, social presence, email communications, and press engagement.
    • Oversee polling, focus groups, and other public opinion research to assess the landscape in which Promote the Vote does its work.
    • Develop proactive and rapid response campaigns to ensure that our pro-voter message cuts through the noise in crowded media markets.
    • Write press releases and statements, pitch stories to targeted reporters, arrange interviews with PTV spokespeople, and lead PTV’s public relations work as needed.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with local, regional, and national news media outlets to demonstrate and grow PTV’s impact across key media markets.
    • Assist the Executive Director and other senior staff in developing and reinforcing PTV’s brand and heightening PTV’s visibility to our supporters and partners.
    • Train and coach internal and external spokespeople to speak on programmatic work and priorities.
    • Oversee the Communications & Creative Manager and PTV’s other communications consultants.

    Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience, with an expected range of $80,000-$85,000. Benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance, a professional development stipend, a simple IRA with employer match, a work from home stipend, and a generous paid leave policy, are available.

    Level of Language Proficiency

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

    • A commitment to PTV’s mission and goals.
    • 10+ years of experience in communications, public relations, or a related field.
    • Familiarity with Michigan’s election law.
    • Excellent attention to detail.
    • Superior organizational and time-management skills, and the ability to manage projects independently and remotely.
    • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to gather information, think creatively, and ensure the work moves forward.
    • The ability to work flexible hours under tight deadlines.
    • The ability to effectively collaborate with PTV staff and partner organizations.

This is primarily a remote position, but we have a preference for candidates based in Michigan.
