Contractor Role | Part-Time | Remote
Purpose
The UEP Communications Contractor will help raise the visibility of SPUN’s Underground Explorers Program (UEP) and its scientists across regions and audiences. This role is dedicated to amplifying UEP research, stories, and voices—particularly in Spanish-speaking countries and the Global South—through media, events, and digital platforms. By driving exposure and tracking its impact, this contractor will support UEP scientists in gaining recognition, building networks, and shaping local impact, policy, and management conversations.
Key Responsibilities
Media & Storytelling
- Pitch stories, interviews, and op-eds to journalists and media outlets, with an emphasis on Spanish-speaking press.
- Secure opportunities for UEP scientists in regional and international media, podcasts, and speaking events.
- Conduct interviews and create write-ups with UEP scientists for the SPUN website and newsletters.
- Support the production of short-format documentaries or multimedia spotlights to showcase UEP scientists’ work.
- Develop a consistent UEP presence across social media and digital platforms.
Impact Measurement
- Track and report on communications outcomes (e.g., number of publications, interviews, speaking opportunities, social media reach).
- Propose and implement systems to evaluate the impact of increased exposure on UEP scientists’ visibility and opportunities.
Qualifications
- Experience in communications, journalism, media relations, or storytelling, ideally in a scientific or nonprofit context.
- Strong ability to pitch and place stories with media outlets; existing press relationships in Latin America/Spanish-speaking regions a plus.
- Excellent writing and interviewing skills in English; fluency in Spanish strongly preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, coordinate across global teams, and work independently.
- Interest in environmental science, conservation, or global equity is a plus.
Contract Structure & Compensation
- Contractor role reporting to and working with SPUN’s Communications team.
- Flexible, remote, ~15–20 hours/month (to be confirmed based on scope).
- Compensation: Flexible, monthly retainer with potential performance-based bonuses for successfully placed stories in external media.
- Initial contract: 3-6 months, with potential to extend based on impact and funding.
