    Description

    The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive of Green Guerillas, providing leadership, strategic guidance, and operational oversight to advance the organization's mission. The ED is responsible for managing the organization's resources, staff, and programs to ensure long-term sustainability and impact. This role requires a dynamic leader who is passionate about community gardening, environmental justice and food justice, with a proven track record in nonprofit management and fundraising.

    Reports to: Board of Directors

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Board Governance and Organizational Leadership
      • Lead Green Guerillas in alignment with the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors, fostering a culture that supports and guides the mission.
      • Act as the primary liaison to the Board, facilitating communication and providing accurate, timely information on organizational performance, strategic opportunities, and risks.
      • Collaborate with the Board to ensure effective governance, including strategic planning, and policy development
    2. Financial Performance and Sustainability
      • Oversee the financial health of Green Guerillas by developing and managing the annual budget, conducting quarterly financial reviews, and maintaining fiscal integrity.
      • Lead fundraising efforts, including grant writing, proposal submission, individual donor cultivation, and the execution of fundraising events and campaigns.
      • Establish diversified funding streams through partnerships with foundations, corporations, and government entities to ensure ongoing financial viability.
    3. Program Development and Community Engagement
      • Collaborate with staff and community partners to develop and implement programs that align with Green Guerillas' mission, such as community garden support, youth empowerment initiatives, and advocacy for environmental and food justice.
      • Strengthen relationships with grassroots community garden groups and New York City’s network of green initiatives, fostering partnerships that amplify Green Guerillas' reach and impact.
      • Oversee program evaluation to ensure that Green Guerillas' initiatives meet community needs and adapt to evolving environmental and social justice priorities.
    4. Operational Management and Staff Development
      • Ensure effective day-to-day operations, including office management, administrative functions, and resource allocation to support program delivery.
      • Lead a team of dedicated staff and volunteers, promoting a collaborative and inclusive work environment. Oversee hiring, onboarding, professional development, and performance evaluations to retain qualified personnel and consultants.
      • Manage contractual agreements and partnerships, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and alignment with Green Guerillas’ values and goals.
    5. Advocacy and Public Relations
      • Serve as the primary spokesperson for Green Guerillas, advocating for community gardening and environmental justice at local and state levels.
      • Engage in public relations activities, including media outreach, public speaking, and relationship-building, to enhance the organization’s visibility and influence.
    6. Risk Management and Compliance
      • Ensure Green Guerillas’ compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including nonprofit, labor, and tax laws.
      • Identify and manage organizational risks, including legal, financial, and reputational risks, developing mitigation strategies to safeguard the organization.
    7. Technology and Innovation
      • Lead efforts to incorporate technology into Green Guerillas’ operations, including data management, communications, and program delivery, to enhance efficiency and outreach.
      • Stay abreast of new technologies and trends in the nonprofit sector, implementing tools that improve organizational effectiveness and community engagement.
    8. Organizational Culture and Equity
      • Champion an organizational culture that values equity, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring that Green Guerillas’ policies and practices reflect these principles both internally and in community interactions.
      • Foster an inclusive environment that supports the contributions of diverse stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, board members, and community partners.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in nonprofit management, environmental studies, public administration, or related field preferred.
    • Minimum of five years in a senior management role, with demonstrable experience in nonprofit leadership, financial management, and strategic planning.
    • Strong fundraising acumen, with a successful track record in securing grants, individual donations, and other revenue sources.
    • Solid budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, and reporting, with a commitment to transparency and accountability.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to inspire and engage a diverse audience of stakeholders, including community members, donors, volunteers, and partners.
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate program and community needs.
