    Description

    The Communications Coordinator is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of strategic communication efforts that align with Black Women for Wellness’ mission, campaigns, and organizational goals. This role focuses on content creation, social media management, public engagement, and digital strategy. The Communications Coordinator will collaborate with internal teams to ensure consistent messaging and effective storytelling across all platforms. This position requires strong writing skills, creativity, digital fluency, and a passion for reproductive justice, racial equity, and health advocacy for Black women and girls.

    The Communications Coordinator will report to the Communications Director and work in close collaboration with program staff, coalition partners, and external stakeholders to raise the visibility of BWW’s initiatives, deepen community engagement, and support movement-building efforts through communications.

    Essential Functions

    Communications & Content Development (50%)

    • Develop compelling content for BWW’s digital platforms including social media, email newsletters, blog posts, and website updates.
    • Support campaign and program teams in writing talking points, press releases, op-eds, and digital action alerts.
    • Create visually engaging graphics and multimedia content to enhance messaging and community engagement.
    • Manage BWW’s content calendar and support storytelling across programs.
    • Capture and archive photos/videos from community events and programmatic activities.
    • Attend BWW events to capture content

    Social Media & Digital Engagement (30%)

    • Collab with BWW’s social media content creators to ideate content for Instagram, Facebook, BlueSky, and other relevant platforms.
    • Monitor trends and develop timely, responsive content aligned with our campaigns and values.
    • Strong graphic design skills to support in creation of flyers, plus campaign and event materials when needed.

    Media Relations & Public Engagement (10%)

    • Assist with media outreach, press events, and relationship-building with journalists.
    • Maintain updated media and partner contact lists.
    • Support promotion of events, webinars, and public campaigns to increase visibility.

    Organizational Support (10%)

    • Provide communications support for fundraising and membership campaigns.
    • Help onboard staff or interns in communications tools and brand guidelines.
    • Participate in cross-department meetings and contribute to organization-wide initiatives.

    What We’re Looking For

    Required:

    • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism or related field required
    • 2–5 years of experience in communications, digital media, marketing or news media (nonprofit or advocacy setting preferred).
    • Strong commitment to reproductive justice, racial justice, and the health of Black women and girls.
    • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills.
    • Proficiency in Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar design tools.
    • Familiarity with content management systems (e.g., WordPress), social media platforms.
    • Experience with photo/video editing is a plus.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggle multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
    • Cultural humility and the ability to authentically engage with and experience Black communities.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Experience working with community-based or social justice organizations, especially those focused on health equity and racial justice.
    • Experience in a nonprofit, advocacy, or grassroots organization.
    • Strong digital storytelling and engagement skills with the ability to create culturally relevant content across platforms.
    • Technical proficiency in Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, social media tools, and web content systems; able to apply analytics to enhance digital strategy.
    • Ability to work on-site, independently, and as part of a team.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a warm and professional demeanor.

The position is based at our Los Angeles headquarters and requires a minimum of two in-office days per week.
