About the Role

The Internships & Volunteer Coordinator, reporting to our Advocacy Director, will oversee recruitment, training, and supervision of interns and volunteers across three core areas:

1. Prison Letter Project – managing and training interns and volunteers who review and respond to hundreds of letters each year from incarcerated individuals in prisons, jails, and ICE detention facilities.
2. Undergraduate & Graduate Internships, Law Clerkships & Post-Graduate Legal Fellowships – recruiting, onboarding, and supporting the next generation of movement lawyers, advocates, and organizers.
3. Community Volunteer Engagement – creating pathways for community members to engage deeply in our work.

The Internships & Volunteer Coordinator plays a key role in building the next generation of movement lawyers, advocates, and organizers. This position ensures that LSPC maintains a diverse and talented pool of interns and volunteers who gain meaningful experience supporting our mission to:

• Release people from jails and prisons
• Restore civil and human rights
• Reunify families and communities impacted by mass incarceration

What you’ll do:

• Manage and administer the organization's internship and volunteer program, including recruitment, training, and supervision of interns and volunteers
• Schedule three internship cycles per year, aligned with the academic calendar: Fall semester, Spring semester, and Summer session
• Serve as a primary point of contact and liaison with law schools, colleges, universities, and community-based organizations supplying volunteers
• Conduct outreach to law schools, universities and local colleges to recruit students
• Coordinate our Prison Letter Project, which is a primary work assignment for all LSPC interns and volunteers, and requires detailed data entry and communication with other LSPC teams
• Manage the selection, onboarding and training of all interns and volunteers
• Collaborate with program staff to assign work or projects to all interns and volunteers
• Conduct onboarding, mid-point, and exit interviews with each interns and volunteers to support program evaluation and effectiveness
• Build and maintain a thriving network of alumni legal fellows, interns and volunteers to support our work

What you bring:

Required Qualifications:

• Organizational excellence: Strong ability to design systems, manage multiple priorities, multitask, and manage and meet multiple deadlines simultaneously.
• Relationship building: Compassionate people skills and a talent for connecting with individuals from diverse racial, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
• Commitment to justice: Deep dedication to social justice, prison abolition, and ending mass criminalization (lived experience as a formerly incarcerated or system-impacted person strongly valued).
• Communication skills: Clear and persuasive written and verbal communication, including the ability to draft outreach materials and facilitate group trainings.
• Tech fluency: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Google Workspace, and comfort learning new platforms or databases.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have:

• Experience supervising or mentoring interns, volunteers, or student fellows.
• Background in legal services, nonprofit program coordination, or grassroots organizing.
• Familiarity with law school recruiting processes, public interest law fellowships, or academic internship programs.
• Experience with CRM or volunteer management systems (e.g., Salesforce, Airtable, or similar).
• Event planning or community outreach experience.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary: $55,000 – $65,000 annually (full-time, non-exempt)
