    Job Overview

    Equality California seeks an Associate Director, Major Gifts Officer to oversee a comprehensive, relationship-based individual giving program of over $1million annually by managing research, identification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgement, and stewardship of sustaining and major donors. The Associate Director, Major Gifts Officer will manage a Donor Relations Manager and work alongside a three-person events team as well as the Director of Development and the Managing and Executive Directors to plan and execute successful communication campaigns and events in which to engage individuals with the capacity and passion to advance the Equality California mission.

    The Donor Relations team will capitalize on strategic opportunities to retain and grow relationships with current constituents; convert event attendees into ongoing supporters; and identify and engage new donors in the Capitol Club (our sustaining donor program for gifts of $600-$4,999 annually) and Leadership Circle (our major donor program for gifts of $5,000+ annually). The Associate Director, Major Gifts Officer’ responsibilities also include direct major gift solicitation; traveling around the state of California and Nevada regularly to build board and donor relationships; supporting host committee management for the five-event Equality Awards series, and organizing six-ten annual donor cultivation events, including three holiday parties.

      This a hybrid-remote role. You will be required to work from our downtown Los Angeles office 2-days per week (Tues/Wed).

      Individual Giving Programs

      • Oversee the Capitol Club and Leadership Circle individual giving programs to ensure budgeted revenue goals are achieved or exceeded and that expenses are not exceeded.
      • Lead identification and research for new major and sustaining donor prospects.
      • Create and execute customized cultivation and ask strategies for each prospect category.
      • Manage Trackers and Dashboard for Leadership Circle and Capitol Club giving programs
      • Conduct in-person meetings to solicit and secure both new and renewal donors, with the participation of the Executive Director, Managing Director, and Director of Development as appropriate.
      • Work with Board and Development Committee members to schedule, plan, and execute cultivation and stewardship events throughout the state.
      • Manage donor acknowledgment, stewardship, and benefit fulfillment to maximize donor engagement and continued support.
      • Provide support to Board members for achieving their annual give/gets.

      Management: Manage Donor Relations Manager and Donor Relations Associate, which includes:

      • Ensuring direct reports are properly onboarded, oriented, and understanding EQCA’s policies, procedures, and logistics.
      • Leading and developing direct reports to ensure professional growth. Support a culture of performance management and coaching and provide ongoing timely and direct feedback about performance, including addressing any performance issues quickly and directly to ensure improved performance.
      • Build and sustain a staff community that encourages understanding and implementation of organizational values, respect, collaboration teamwork, and healthy conflict resolution.
      • Ensure any legal and/or human resources issues are addressed promptly and proactively.

      Reporting/Finance:

      • Oversee maintenance of current, accurate records of all donor information and correspondence.
      • Provide regular progress reports to the management staff and Board.
      • Participate in the creation of annual expenses and revenue budgets.
      • Track monthly expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgets.

      The ideal candidate will work hard to foster a positive, professional public image for Equality California, which includes:

      • Ensuring that all donors receive regular communications and updates in accordance with their preferences.
      • Representing EQCA at community and/or professional activities and events.
      • Maintaining professional relationships with local, statewide, and national LGBTQ and allied agencies and collaborators.

      The above is not an exhaustive list of duties, and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your role within the organization and the overall operational needs of the organization.

      Required Skills and Abilities

      • At least three to six years of experience in managing donor relations, individual giving, major
      • donors, and/or sponsorships.
      • One year of experience managing direct reports is required.
      • Reliable transportation with the ability to travel frequently to major markets throughout California and Nevada is required.
      • Travel is expected at least 25% of the time. You must possess a valid driver's license and personal auto insurance coverage.
      • Knowledge, passion, and commitment to addressing issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community as
      • well as advancing equity and social justice generally.
      • Database management experience required.

      Education

      • A bachelor’s degree is required.
