    Description

We are seeking an experienced Fractional CFO who understands nonprofit finance inside and out — from compliance to forecasting — and can serve as a trusted partner to leadership and our board.

    Role Overview

The Fractional CFO will provide strategic financial oversight, ensure regulatory compliance, and guide Sound Future toward long-term financial sustainability. You will work closely with the CEO, COO, and Board Finance Committee to keep financial systems clean, audit-ready, and aligned with best practices for growing nonprofits.

This position is ideal for a seasoned nonprofit finance professional who enjoys working with small but ambitious organizations and is willing to roll up their sleeves.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure 501(c)(3) compliance, GAAP adherence, and timely 990 filings; support annual audit or financial review.
    • Accounting Oversight: Supervise bookkeeping, payroll, AP/AR, and monthly reconciliations (not necessarily performing these tasks directly, but ensuring they’re done correctly).
    • Grant & Donor Tracking: Develop and maintain systems for restricted/unrestricted fund tracking and grant reporting.
    • Board & Leadership Support: Present financials to the board in a clear, strategic format and provide recommendations on risk management and cash flow.
    • Financial Strategy & Forecasting: Build budgets and multi-year projections aligned with Sound Future’s goals; provide scenario planning and actionable insights.
    • System Improvements: Help streamline financial tools and workflows, integrating with CRM as needed.

    Qualifications

    • Experience: 5+ years in nonprofit finance leadership roles
    • Knowledge: Expert understanding of nonprofit compliance, GAAP, and fund accounting.
    • Skills:
    • Strong financial modeling and forecasting ability.
    • Excellent communication — able to explain complex financials to non-finance audiences.
    • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct).
    • Mindset:
    • Strategic and detail-oriented.
    • Trusted advisor who anticipates challenges before they arise.
    • Comfortable working with a small, entrepreneurial team.
