    Description

    The National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) is seeking a talented attorney to work as our first California Project Director. This important role will increase the reach and impact of NCLC’s advocacy work in California by providing legal technical assistance, training, and other support to California advocates.

    The California Project Director will be expected to deepen NCLC’s relationships across the state with legal services providers, members of the private bar, legislators,as well as assist in cultivating relationships with funders and donors. This is an exciting opportunity to build out a national advocacy group's California work and presence as well as develop a new model for NCLC’s potential future work at the state level. The initial hire will be for one year, subject to renewal based on success of this initial launch.

    The successful candidate will be a seasoned economic justice advocate who is:

    • A leader, driven to further economic justice for low-income Californians and build the capacity of California economic justice advocates;
    • A changemaker, excited to work with legal service providers, other allies, and NCLC’s contract lobbyist in Sacramento to help bring about the policy changes that low-income people and communities need;
    • A connector and facilitator, eager to build on a solid foundation of relationships between NCLC and California legal services providers and members of the private bar, interested in learning from California legal services advocates what resources they need, and able to quickly connect California advocates and legal service providers to NCLC’s national experts and technical resources.

    This position will be a hybrid role. While the role can be based anywhere in California, frequent travel to Sacramento and regular state-wide travel is expected.

    Qualifications:

    • A law degree from an accredited law school.
    • Admission to the bar in good standing required; CA Bar admission preferred
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment, manage competing priorities, and act independently.
    • Strong legal and analytical skills
    • Strong communication skills, including effective and persuasive writing, public speaking and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse coalitions, funders, and the media, including a track record of building connections between people and organizations to advance shared objectives
    • Ability to represent NCLC in a range of situations.
    • Ability to be flexible, collaborative, diplomatic, and proactive and to work with staff throughout NCLC.
    • Demonstrated commitment to advocating for equity for low-income and other historically marginalized and economically disadvantaged people and communities.
    • At least 7 years of professional experience.
    • Expertise in consumer issues is strongly preferred.
    • Spanish language proficiency is preferred.
