    About The Sentry

The Sentry is an investigative and policy organization that seeks to disable multinational predatory networks that benefit from violent conflict, repression, and kleptocracy.

Pull back the curtain on wars, mass atrocities, and other human rights abuses, and you’ll find grand corruption and unchecked greed. These tragedies persist because the perpetrators rarely face meaningful consequences. The Sentry aims to alter the warped incentive structures that continually undermine peace and good governance. Our investigations follow the money as it is laundered from war zones to financial centers around the world. We provide evidence and strategies for governments, banks, and law enforcement to hold the perpetrators and enablers of violence and corruption to account. These efforts provide new leverage for human rights, peace, and anti-corruption efforts.

    Position Overview

The Sentry is seeking an experienced Senior Editor responsible for directing and executing comprehensive editorial, review, and quality assurance processes for all reports, policy briefs, presentations, and other written materials. The Senior Editor works directly with report authors, in collaboration with other relevant staff, to produce high-quality and high-impact reports and materials to engage a range of audiences, from experts and policymakers to journalists, influencers, and the general public.

    Key Responsibilities

    General Editing:

    • Serve as senior editor on all projects published by The Sentry, including investigative and policy reports, op-eds, alerts, and other materials.
    • Ensure alignment of written products with agreed policy frameworks and language, strategic objectives, and core mission.
    • Ensure that all content meets The Sentry’s editorial and style standards.
    • Steward, implement, and maintain The Sentry’s voice across products written by diverse authors.
    • Strengthen structure, sequencing, coherence, and clarity of content, ensuring that main ideas and policy points are presented powerfully and concisely.
    • Check facts and quotes cited in public sources, flag assertions needing citation, and provide research support when possible.
    • Evaluate, challenge, and bolster, as appropriate, the logic, coherence, and consistency of facts and arguments presented by author(s).
    • Liaise with external lawyers on libel reviews and implement and maintain risk-mitigating legal phrasing.

    Coaching and Mentoring:

    • Work with writers of varying skill and experience, providing constructive feedback and one-on-one coaching to improve key writing skills including storytelling, structure, readability, and persuasiveness.
    • Review and give constructive feedback at every stage of a product, from conception to final draft.

    Project Management:

    • Direct editorial processes for all reports from conception through to final product, working with policy, investigations, communications, and development teams.
    • Manage production processes and coordinate with all stakeholders to ensure reviews and revisions occur.
    • Manage freelance editors and translators.
    • Coordinate legal reviews and revisions, in consultation with authors and legal counsel.
    • Set production timelines, negotiating priorities, schedules, and expectations.
    • Review and give guidance on research proposals and outlines.
    • Track progress of editorial products and update directors and teams regularly, including by hosting a weekly product status meeting.
    • Collaborate across time zones with global colleagues.
    • Routinely engage with senior leadership to update them and seek their input.
    • Demonstrate flexibility to accommodate changing priorities and schedules.
    • Create and implement trainings on editorial and production processes for staff members.

    Quality Assurance:

    • Manage and maintain strict version control on reports and other written products.
    • Write and maintain in-house stylebook, ensuring authors’ adherence to style guidelines.

    Other:

    • Engage in administrative and organizational tasks as necessary.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Required Experience and Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • At least 5 years working in a professional editing role
    • Superior writing, copyediting, and proofreading skills
    • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a fast-paced, rapid-response environment, balancing multiple projects and tasks while meeting deadlines
    • Well-developed decision-making, planning, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
    • A high level of energy, dependability, creativity, initiative, and passion
    • Commitment to The Sentry’s mission and goals
    • Based in the United States

    Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

    • Foreign language skills, especially French or Arabic
    • Experience working on corruption, illicit finance, environmental crimes, human rights, or conflict
