    Description

    About Kinston Teens:

Kinston Teens, Inc. is a youth-led and youth-centered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission of empowering young people through service, leadership, and civic engagement. Kinston Teens was created in direct response to youth-involved gun violence and systemic disinvestment in East Kinston—the most economically distressed neighborhood in North Carolina. Over the past decade, our organization has grown into a recognized force for youth-driven and neighborhood-focused community development, leading efforts to reduce blight, increase food security, promote environmental resilience, and mobilize youth in civic engagement and advocacy. The East Kinston Neighborhood Hub, operated by Kinston Teens, serves as our flagship resilience hub and community center.

    Position Overview:

The Communications and Operations Assistant will provide critical administrative, communications, and organizational support to the Executive Director, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations and effective storytelling of Kinston Teens’ work. This role combines elements of internal administration, external communications, and light executive assistant functions. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, adaptable, and comfortable balancing multiple priorities—ranging from drafting social media posts to filing receipts, managing calendars, and assisting with program logistics.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Administrative & Operations Support

    • Serve as the primary staff member handling day-to-day administrative functions for the organization.
    • Collaborate with our CPA firm for bookkeeping by organizing and submitting financial documentation (receipts, bank statements, invoices, etc.).
    • Assist the Executive Director and Operations Manager with HR-related tasks in coordination with our Professional Employer Organization (PEO), including payroll updates, employee record maintenance, and benefits administration.
    • Manage the organization’s internal and external calendar of events, scheduling meetings, and coordinating logistics.
    • Support program operations with logistics, scheduling, and materials preparation.

    Communications & Marketing

    • Occasionally draft and schedule social media posts, email newsletters, and other digital content to engage supporters and share program updates.
    • Capture and edit basic photography and video content for storytelling purposes.
    • Monitor media coverage and support press outreach when needed.

    Executive Support

    • Provide direct administrative assistance to the Executive Director, including scheduling, meeting preparation, and follow-up.
    • Assist in managing correspondence and responding to inquiries from community members, partners, and stakeholders.
    • Staff the Executive Director at select public functions, conferences, and events, providing on-site coordination and logistical support as needed.

    Other duties as assigned.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X).
    • Basic photography, videography, and content creation skills are a plus.
    • Experience with nonprofit administration, communications, or community engagement preferred.
    • Commitment to Kinston Teens’ mission and values.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in an intergenerational and multicultural environment.
    • Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
    • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

    Work Environment:

This position will primarily work indoors at the Kinston Teens Office or the East Kinston Neighborhood Hub. There will be occasional outdoor events and field work, such as event tabling, canvassing, or supervising volunteer projects during which sufficient mobility is required to navigate uneven terrain. Some travel to attend events, trainings, or conferences is required. We believe in fostering a healthy work-life balance and provide a flexible work environment that aligns with our mission of serving the community on days and times most accessible to those most impacted by our programs. Kinston Teens occasionally hosts evening or weekend meetings or events, in which this position will be required to staff.
