Organization: California Institute on Law, Neuroscience, and Education (CA Institute) at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco (UC Law SF)

    Start Date: ASAP

    Time Commitment: 5-15 hours/week, 4-12 months

Compensation: We will entertain proposals in the range of $40,000 to $70,000 for up to 12 months

    ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

On July 27, 2021, the California Bench to School Initiative was enacted to create the California Institute on Law, Neuroscience, and Education (CA Institute) - an interdisciplinary multi-campus collaboration between University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco (UC Law SF), University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

The CA Institute is the state’s most innovative and effective effort to invest in our most vulnerable youth and communities. Combining data-driven research, unique and effective interdisciplinary programs, and a proactive investment beginning with California’s most disadvantaged youth, the CA Institute improves thousands of lives, saves state resources, disrupts the school-to-prison pipeline, and elevates California to be a national leader on behalf of our children.

Our mission at the CA Institute is to develop integrated and inclusive research that studies factors related to youth success. By combining multiple perspectives, we are reshaping law and policy across health, justice, and education systems, so that every child in California can thrive in school, career, and life.

    POSITION OVERVIEW

The CA Institute seeks an experienced, well-connected, and dynamic Fundraising Consultant to lead development and donor engagement efforts with both private donors and public entities. This consultant will bring a strong network of philanthropic and policy contacts, along with demonstrated experience in institutional fundraising, strategic communication, and stakeholder cultivation. Working closely with leadership and core staff, the consultant will play a central role in advancing the Institute’s visibility, influence, and long-term financial sustainability.

    ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Develop and execute a fundraising strategy focused on cultivating support from private foundations, major donors, state and public sources, and aligned philanthropic partners.
    • Leverage existing relationships and networks to open new funding and strategic partnership opportunities.
    • Deepen existing relationships with current and prospective donors through proactive communication and stewardship.
    • Create compelling communication materials, including pitch decks, donor briefings, and strategic overviews of the Institute’s work.
    • Lead or support grant writing, including letters of inquiry, concept papers, full proposals, and progress reports.
    • Cultivate relationships with key policymakers, legislative staff, and agency leaders to increase awareness of the Institute’s work and policy relevance.
    • Provide strategic advice on state-level policy and philanthropic engagement, with a focus on California.
    • Maintain organized records of fundraising contacts, grant cycles, and institutional relationships.

    REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE

    • Bachelor’s Degree required, additional relevant degrees a plus
    • 10+ years of experience in development, public affairs, or strategic partnerships – preferably in nonprofit, academic, and/or government settings.
    • Existing relationships with philanthropic institutions, donors, and/or state policy leaders.
    • Strong writing, storytelling, and communications skills across audiences.
    • Demonstrated ability to cultivate, close, and steward donor and funder relationships.
    • Knowledge of California state policy and public funding structures.
    • Self-directed, flexible, and highly collaborative
    • Commitment to the CA Institute’s mission to promote equity and improve outcomes for underserved communities.
