    Description

Organization: Governments, landlords, employers, and other powerful actors use artificial intelligence (AI), algorithms, and related technologies to make decisions about how low-income people work, live, learn, and survive. When people are hurt by AI decision-making, they have few places to turn. TechTonic Justice exists to change this.

TechTonic Justice is a recently launched organization to fight the ground-level harms AI causes low-income communities. We do this mainly by supporting local justice movements--legal aid organizations, frontline service providers, grassroots organizers, and affected communities--to identify and fight harmful uses of AI. We emphasize a multidimensional advocacy approach that blends litigation, community activation and organizing, public education, and narrative advocacy. We are a remote organization and offer our services nationwide, with emphasis on the South and the West Coast.

Position description: This permanent, full-time, exempt Digital Manager (for Organizing and Communications) position is fully remote with occasional travel anticipated (~3-6 trips per year). Candidates who live in or have extensive working experience in the U.S. South are particularly encouraged to apply. As discussed below, candidates must have at least 5 years of experience in social media, marketing, digital organizing, or campaigning with anti-poverty (including its many intersections), tech justice, or other values-aligned organizations.

This position will join TTJ’s existing five-member team. The Digital Manager will develop our online communication strategy and direct the day-to-day workflow of our digital and communications operations and long-term narrative campaigns. The role blends the disciplines of digital organizing, content creation, and traditional media management. The role will also strategize techniques to increase web engagement, boost brand awareness, respond to audience inquiries and concerns, and resolve or escalate high-level complaints.

The ideal candidate is a compelling storyteller, analytically minded, and skilled at managing cross-platform communication to drive engagement, action, and impact. They may also have experience in an advocacy, labor, civil society, or political campaign role managing integrated, data-driven digital campaigns spanning social media, website development, email advocacy outreach, and paid media. This role will be (1) helping substantiate the public’s understanding that using AI to make decisions about the lives of low-income people is often harmful and (2) leveraging our digital footprint and communications infrastructure as a gateway to engage members of impacted communities in our advocacy efforts.

    The role’s general responsibilities include:

    Digital Organizing & Strategy

    • Design and execute multi-channel digital organizing strategies (email, social, SMS, petitions, and events) to surface high-potential geographic and policy advocacy opportunities for on-the-ground organizing.
    • Build and manage digital supporter lists (email/SMS), create segmentation strategies, and optimize digital ladders of engagement.
    • Develop and manage localized digital content, volunteer engagement funnels, and distributed organizing infrastructure to test narratives and mobilize online supporters into offline actions.
    • Analyze supporter engagement data across digital platforms to identify trends, build heatmaps, and inform regional field deployment strategies.
    • Utilize digital ads as strategic forms of boosting engagement.
    • Set up and manage digital tools such as CRMs (EveryAction, Action Network), peer to peer texting platforms (ThruText, GetThru), and advocacy tools.
    • Monitor and analyze digital performance metrics (traffic, engagement, conversations) using tools like Google Analytics, MailChimp, and Meta Business Suite to inform content strategy and planning.
    • Create landing pages to track sign ups, events, issue-based campaigns, etc.

    Content Creation

    • Oversee big-picture strategy of emails, newsletters, social media, content production, digital ads, and digital organizing.
    • Manage content calendar and ensure consistency in voice, tone, branding, and narrative.
    • Launch and manage day-to-day execution, creation, analytics, editing, and posting of all digital content, including: social media platforms (LinkedIn, BlueSky, YouTube, Instagram, Meta) and newsletters.
    • Create compelling messaging content for fundraising emails, social media posts, SMS, website, and newsletters.
    • Research alternative communications delivery systems and trends to keep us relevant.
    • Coordinate messaging and narrative arcs that drive people toward a desired action.
    • Coordinate with external partners on content creation, comms strategies, and amplification requests.
    • Ensure compliance with digital best practices, accessibility standards, and data privacy regulations.
    • Represent TechTonic in partner and coalition spaces.

    Media Relations & External Communications

    • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, social media influencers, and media partners.
    • Draft, place, and distribute press releases, media advisories, op-eds, and talking points.
    • Track media coverage and identify strategic opportunities for continued media engagement.
    • Train and prepare spokespeople within the organization and directly-impacted communities we serve for interviews and public appearances.

    Requirements

    • 5+ years of experience in social media, marketing, digital organizing, or campaigning with anti-poverty (including its many intersections), tech justice, or other values-aligned organizations.
    • Skills and vision needed to build a strategic communications approach for a start-up organization.
    • Demonstrated success managing digital campaigns that drive action and engagement.
    • Strong verbal, writing, and editing skills across formats (email, press release, social, long-form).
    • Proficiency in digital platforms including Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Meta, Instagram, Bluesky, TikTok, YouTube, SMS platforms, and MailChimp. CRM experience is an advantage.
    • Fluency in social media and internet culture and understanding of the trends and best practices for digital comms.
    • Keen attention to detail.
    • Familiarity with media relations, including pitching, writing press materials, and media monitoring.
    • Independent initiative that does not require intensive, detail-heavy supervision.
    • Flexibility to adapt as needed to a fluid environment of a startup nonprofit organization where immediate needs and timelines may shift.
    • Emotional intelligence, empathy, and righteous fury.
    • Collaborative spirit and the skills needed to work affirmingly with teammates, partners, coalition members, and the communities we exist to serve.
    • Ability to manage several different kinds of work activities concurrently, prioritize appropriately, and deliver quality work product promptly.
    • Comfort articulating the intersections between poverty, race, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, language, age, disability, and related characteristics.

    Other Valued Attributes:

    • Curiosity around A/B message testing, surveys, focus groups, and user testing tools to advance or fine-tune narrative work.
    • Knowledge of HTML/CSS for website maintenance.
    • Experience working with outside consultants.
    • Functional fluency in a second language that is used by significant numbers of low-income people; Spanish is particularly helpful.
    • Candidates who live in or have extensive working experience in the U.S. South are particularly encouraged to apply.

If you meet the core experience requirement and some, but not all, of the others, please still consider applying or email us to ask about where you fall short.

We encourage applications from Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, women, LGBTQI+ people, people with disabilities, formerly incarcerated people, and people most impacted by systemic injustice.
