    About The Art League

Founded in 1954, The Art League is a nonprofit visual arts organization dedicated to nurturing the artistic spirit through education, exhibitions, and community outreach. Serving more than 7,000 students annually, The Art League operates a renowned school, gallery, and art supply store—all housed in the heart of Alexandria’s Old Town North Arts District. Our programs reach far beyond our walls through community partnerships that use art as a catalyst for healing, empowerment, and inclusion.

    The Opportunity

We’re seeking a creative, strategic, and community-minded Communications Director to tell the stories that bring our mission to life. This role leads all external communications—developing and executing strategies that promote our visual arts school, member gallery, fundraising campaigns, and outreach initiatives.

If you love the arts, thrive in a collaborative environment, and are passionate about the power of storytelling to build community, we want to meet you.

    • Create engaging content for various platforms, including print, email, digital, and social media, as well as website updates and press releases.
    • Oversee the design and production of marketing and fundraising collateral (Adobe Suite proficiency required).
    • Manage media relations and serve as spokesperson for institutional communications.
    • Track analytics to measure impact and guide future strategy.
    • Supervise and collaborate with a Communications Specialist, contractors, and partners.
    • Coordinate communications support across departments (School, Gallery, Development, and Store).
    • Participate in monthly gallery openings and several weekend events each year.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Communications, Marketing, or related field.
    • Minimum 3 years of communications leadership experience, preferably in the nonprofit or arts sector.
    • Exceptional writing, editing, and visual storytelling skills.
    • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
    • Familiarity with WordPress, Mailchimp, Eventbrite, or Bloomerang.
    • Collaborative, flexible, and eager to connect art with community impact.
    • Willingness to work occasional evenings/weekends for events.
