    Description

    Day Eight is seeking a dynamic and organized Teacher / Teaching Artist to work with children in grades K-2 in the after-school program at Center City PCS - Congress Heights. The position will teach a classroom of 15 to 25 K-2 students in the after-care program at the school every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from 3:30-5:30pm.

    Center City PCS-Congress Heights, located at 220 Highview Place SE, serves grades PK-3 to 8. Day Eight and Center City PCS-Congress Heights have a longstanding partnership, but this will be the first semester of Day Eight's service in the after-care program at the school. The Teaching Artist will have a hand in shaping a program that is expected to continue in the spring, and for subsequent years.

    This is an ideal opportunity for an individual who is passionate about creativity and early childhood education to positively influence a school community. The program is expected to integrate best practices in English language learning through movement, storytelling, visual arts, and other forms of creative expression.

    Responsibilities

    • Read a new story to the youth each week and facilitate engagement with the story over multiple days by supporting youth to act out phrases, pages, and storylines, using movement games and activities, re-telling the stories in their own words, and other creative interpretations and re-interpretations
    • Reflect weekly on student needs, interests, and experiences, to inform future session design
    • Organize and maintain materials for internal and external storytelling about the program
    • Create weekly lesson plans including prep of materials for use each day
    • Collaborate with Day Eight staff, and teachers at the school, to plan and deliver lessons designed to stimulate activity, creativity, and engagement for K-2 grade students in the after-care program at the school
    • Arrive to the space prior to the start time to set up the space each program day
    • Clean up the space after each program day
    • Track attendance at the site and log attendance online for each program day

    Qualifications

    • Experience working with K-2 children in similar settings
    • Strong organizational and communication skills
    • Interest in, or experience with, Readers Theater programs for similar age groups
    • Experience teaching english, theater, dance, or visual arts activities for similar age groups
    • Ability to work independently
    • Experience with office tools including google docs and email
    • Spanish language skills a plus
    • DCPS Background check required; cost of background check covered by DCPS

    Compensation and Work Dates/Times

    This is a contract Teacher / Teaching Artist position paid at rate of $35-37/hr based on experience.

    The position pays 6 hours a week at $35-$37, a total of $210-$222 per week, $840-$888 per month. Only the time in the classroom with the children is paid in this position. The teaching artist is required to spend time independently preparing lessons for each session. Payment is made by check sent on the first of each month for work the previous month.

    The Teacher/Teaching Artist will work in person at Center City PCS-Congress Heights every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 3:30 to 5:30pm, beginning Tuesday September 30 and ending Thursday December 10. There are no sessions the week of Thanksgiving, November 24-28.
