  • Mission

KVMR connects, informs and empowers our community by developing content that celebrates diversity in music and culture and fosters civic engagement and good will.

Our “North Star”, guiding light, are our listeners including those who do not see/hear themselves reflected in other regional media sources.

VISION: KVMR celebrates the music of the world and gives voice to the community.

    About Us

KVMR serves the diverse communities of Nevada County, the Sierra Foothills, and a growing global streaming audience—by providing an inclusive platform for local voices, music, arts, and culture. We connect residents, artists, and community-minded businesses through authentic, non-commercial programming created by over 100 volunteer broadcasters.

By uplifting underrepresented perspectives and fostering creative expression, KVMR strengthens community ties and keeps the spirit of independent radio vibrant and alive.

    KVMR’s core values center on:

    • Community – Serving as a trusted hub that connects and reflects the people, stories, and cultures of our region.
    • Diversity & Inclusion – Uplifting underrepresented voices and fostering a wide range of music, arts, and perspectives.
    • Authenticity – Staying true to our mission as an independent, non-commercial, listener-supported station.
    • Creativity & Expression – Encouraging innovation and individuality among our volunteer broadcasters and staff.
    • Service – Providing reliable, meaningful programming that informs, entertains, and enriches our audience.
    • Collaboration – Working with local organizations, artists, and businesses to strengthen the cultural fabric of our community.

KVMR also holds significant value as an emergency broadcast station because it serves as a trusted, hyperlocal lifeline during crises — providing real-time, on-the-ground information tailored specifically to Nevada County.

While KVMR is not the only emergency broadcast outlet in the area (commercial stations and public safety alerts also operate), it is unique in its deep local roots, volunteer broadcaster network, and direct connections to county emergency services. This allows KVMR to:

    • Rapidly share evacuation orders, shelter information, road closures, and safety updates.
    • Reach residents who may not use smartphones, social media, or other digital channels.
    • Offer calm, human-centered communication from familiar local voices, which builds trust and reduces panic.
    • Continue broadcasting during power outages and wildfires through its robust backup systems.

In short, KVMR’s role is indispensable — it acts as Nevada County’s community-centered emergency voice when people most need reliable local information.
