Adventure Guide & Guide Leader (Volunteer Position)
Location: Local parks and nature preserves in the Lake Norman/Denver, NC area.
Time Commitment: Varies (Guides: 1-2 times per week, Guide Leader: 2-4 times per week)
Overview:
Do you love working with kids or sharing your knowledge of the outdoors? OWL Outdoors is looking for Adventure Guides and a Guide Leader to lead children on nature adventures, teaching them about local flora, fauna, and environmental stewardship.
Available Positions:
🌿 Kids Club Guide – Meets twice a month with groups of kids and families of all ages.
🌿 OWL Academy Guide – Meets twice a week to guide students on nature hikes.
🌿 Afterschool Adventure Guide – Meets twice a week for afterschool hikes with kids.
- Guide – Leads groups on guided nature hikes as part of OWL’s Kids Club, OWL Academy, or Afterschool Adventure programs.
- Guide Leader – Oversees other guides, ensures program consistency, and leads OWL Academy & Afterschool Adventure programs.
Responsibilities:
Adventure Guide:
- Lead engaging, educational hikes for children and families.
- Teach kids how to observe wildlife and appreciate nature.
- Share knowledge about plants, animals, and conservation practices.
- Encourage positive outdoor habits and environmental responsibility.
- Ensure safety and provide basic first aid if needed.
Guide Leader (Additional Responsibilities):
- Train and mentor new volunteer Adventure Guides.
- Develop and refine adventure and lesson plans.
- Manage scheduling and coordination for OWL Academy & Afterschool Adventure programs.
- Serve as the primary contact for hike-related program logistics.
Qualifications:
- Love for the outdoors and a passion for teaching kids about nature.
- Good communication and leadership skills.
- Ability to hike 2-4 miles while engaging with children.
- Comfortable leading groups of kids in an outdoor setting.
- Experience with environmental education, hiking, or outdoor safety (a plus but not required).
- CPR/First Aid certification (required for Guide Leader, preferred for Guides – OWL Outdoors may assist with certification).
