    Description

Mentors Needed for High School Seniors Applying to College! (SHORT-TERM)

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A GREAT KID’S LIFE!

    Be a Mentor!

Statement Arts believes in the power of integrated arts education to cultivate the next generation of leaders who can inspire social and cultural change. Our holistic approach supports young people and offers the space and opportunities to find their voices and add their statements to the world.

The StART Dreaming College Readiness Program is a free-year-long program designed to help young people with the support they need and prepares them for their upcoming college admission process. There are two components to this program: The Summer Performing Arts Intensive and our Fall Mentor Sessions. The Summer Intensive lasts for 4 weeks and includes writing, music and acting curriculum that expands creative minds. The program continues throughout the school year with our Fall Mentor Sessions which includes assistance with college applications, financial aid and FAFSA forms, finding scholarships, and preparing our students for what to expect once they head off to college. We currently have a 100% success rate getting our kids into higher learning institutions and most of them receive substantial scholarships.

What’s Expected as a Mentor: All sessions will be virtual and take place via Zoom. Each mentor will be assigned at least one Statement Arts’ student. You will meet with your mentee every week and together you will go through the applications for the colleges and schools that your mentee is interested in attending. Most of these applications will be accessible using the COMMON APP or the CUNY Portal, however, there may be some schools (Georgetown, MIT, Rutgers) that have their own unique application. This process will need to be individualized as each student will face different challenges. Some of these challenges may be in the home, financial, or academic. Statement Arts will provide mentors with the guidance and information needed to support mentees throughout the program and will be available for any questions.

Time Commitment: Outside of one orientation, 8 sessions (and two optional FAFSA Workshops), additional one on one time may be scheduled based on each mentee’s needs and additional sessions may be scheduled in the winter of 2023 based on their progress. On average our mentors donate between 25 to 35 hours from October, 2022 to January, 2023 for this program.

Times: All zoom meetings are scheduled on EASTERN TIME.
