School Program Assistants help meet school field trips at the park and assist and lead guided nature tours (training provided). Assistants can specialize in certain topic areas or learn several of the programs offered. School Programs are offered Tuesday through Friday and some Mondays primarily during of the school year, and times vary, but often fall between 9:30 am until 1:30 pm. School Program volunteers are asked to help with at least 12 programs/year. Assistants receive initial orientation on nature and wildlife skills for those programs. Some children's camps occur during weekdays when school is not in session.
Public Program Assistants check in program attendees and assist the program leader on events like campfires, guided walks, star gazing, and classroom sessions. These programs usually occur in the evening or on weekends. Some children's camps occur during weekdays when school is not in session.
There are also opportunities for all volunteers to participate in other public programs as training and are invited to twice annual Volunteer BrushUp trainings as well as to an annual recognition and social events.
Most programs require ages 16 or older to volunteer, but in summer our Nature Teen Volunteers, starting at age 14, serve as mentors for younger students.
