Volunteer Opportunity: Education Navigator

Futures Unwalled is seeking passionate volunteers to serve as Education Navigators, supporting parents and caregivers in understanding and advocating for their child’s educational rights. This role is perfect for individuals with lived experience navigating IEPs, 504 plans, or school-related services - or anyone passionate about educational equity and family empowerment.
Responsibilities
Provide one-on-one support to parents navigating IEPs, 504 Plans, and school services
Help families understand school communications, assessments, and procedural safeguards
Connect families to relevant resources such as McKinney-Vento support, translation services, or mental health referrals
Attend IEP/504 meetings (virtually or in person) as a support person when needed
Collaborate with Futures Unwalled staff to log volunteer activities and support tracking
Participate in ongoing training to deepen knowledge of special education and education rights
Training & Support
Volunteers will receive initial and ongoing training on:
Special education rights (IDEA, Section 504, McKinney-Vento)
Trauma-informed practices
Culturally responsive communication
Supervision and mentorship provided by senior staff or peer mentors
Commitment
Minimum 3-5 hours per month
3-month commitment preferred
Flexible schedule with some availability for school meeting hours (8AM-3PM)
