    Role Overview

Philly CoderDojo is seeking volunteer Tech Mentors to support our free, virtual coding clubs for youth ages 7–17. As a Tech Mentor, you’ll help young learners explore programming, game development, web design, and more in a fun, inclusive, and project-based environment.

No teaching experience is required—just a passion for technology and a desire to inspire the next generation of creators.

    Responsibilities

    • Guide youth through coding activities using platforms like Scratch, HTML/CSS, C#, Python, or Unity
    • Encourage creativity, problem-solving, and peer learning
    • Support a safe, inclusive, and engaging virtual learning space
    • Collaborate with fellow mentors to plan and facilitate sessions
    • Commit to at least 1–2 hours of prep time per session (materials provided)
    • Attend bi-monthly Saturday sessions via Zoom (or as your schedule allows)

    Qualifications

    • Basic knowledge of at least one programming language or platform
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills
    • Enthusiasm for mentoring and working with youth
    • Ability to pass a background check (required for working with minors)
    • Access to a computer and reliable internet connection

    Why Volunteer with Us?

    • Make a real impact in the lives of youth from underrepresented communities
    • Join a supportive, mission-driven team of volunteers
    • Gain experience in mentorship, education, and community tech outreach
    • Help close the digital skills gap and build a more inclusive tech future

    Not a coder? No problem!

We also welcome volunteers for non-technical roles supporting Philly CoderDojo’s development, outreach, and administration.

Have a child who loves tech?

Parents are welcome to enroll their children in our free coding sessions—no volunteer commitment required. But if you’re interested in giving back while your child learns, we’d love to have you join our mentor team too!

    Additional Requirements

To ensure a safe and supportive environment for our youth, all volunteers must:

    • Complete required federal, state, and local clearances to work with minors
    • Complete online safeguarding training, including:
      • CoderDojo Ethos & Behavior: Implementation and Practice
      • Social Media & Communication Guidelines for Volunteers

These steps are essential to maintaining the integrity and safety of our program. We’re here to support you through the process!
