    Description

Adult Literacy Tutor - Teach Someone to Read...Change a Life!

Literacy is the key to independence, self-sufficiency and pride. Help empower someone by providing them with the tools needed to access all of life's possibilities. 1-2 hours a week can change someone's life - and your life, too. Literacy Plus, Hayward Public Library's adult literacy program, conducts a free, online training for new volunteer tutors three times per year.

Volunteers must complete an online Tutor Training course, attend the live Zoom orientation, and attend the in-person Tutor Training. You can fill out a Literacy Plus application here: https://bit.ly/LitPlusTraining

For additional information, visit https://www.hayward-ca.gov/public-library/services/adult-literacy-tutoring or call Literacy Plus at 510-583-8557.

Literacy Tutor Qualifications: Tutors must be 18 or older, speak English clearly, and have good reading and writing skills. You do not need a teaching background to be a tutor. Tutors must also commit to 1 to 2 hours of tutoring a week for at least six months. All tutor applicants must also pass a background check, and fully participate in the tutor training sessions. *Volunteers must be located in the surrounding area*

We offer a hybrid Tutor Orientation and Training. It will be broken down into 4 parts:

    1. Online Orientation Tutorial (Self-Guided): Open now and takes approximately 1 hour to complete in your own time
    2. Live Zoom Orientation Session: May 19th 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM OR May 20th 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM (must choose ONE date to attend)
    3. Online Tutor Training Tutorial (Self-Guided): Available once orientation is complete and takes approximately 2 hours to complete in your own time
    4. In-person Tutor Training Session: May 30th 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
