    Description

Math Tutor for an Adult Learner

If you can spare two hours a week, you can make a positive difference in the life of another adult through tutoring!

Oakland Literacy Council in suburban Detroit is looking for compassionate volunteers who are at least 18 years old to tutor adults for two hours a week for a year (with time off for vacations and holidays). Each volunteer works individually with one student at a time convenient for both. Tutors and students choose whether to meet face to face or virtually.
Currently, we have a large demand for tutors to work with Math students. Some of these students are working toward a high school equivalency degree but need to brush up on foundational math skills first, such as fractions, algebra, and geometry.
Because of the help provided by our tutors, our learners achieve such goals as better employment, a high school equivalency degree, or post-secondary education opportunities. They can better understand finances, help their children with schoolwork, and more. The role of number sense and an understanding of mathematics grows more important every day. Problem solving, critical thinking, computation, measurement, and geometry are just some of the ways math arises in our everyday lives. This is a rewarding volunteer opportunity where you see the impact of your work directly in your student’s life!
No previous tutoring experience is required. Six hours of training and curriculum are provided. This is a perfect opportunity for college students, recent graduates taking a gap year, retirees, and others.
