    Description

    Volunteer: Peer Counselor( North Carolina) only in the location area of Greensboro, NC

    About the Organization

    We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals and communities affected by substance abuse. Through education, peer support, and community development initiatives, we strive to create safe spaces for healing, growth, and transformation.

    The Remote Volunteer Peer Counselor provides compassionate, nonjudgmental peer support to individuals navigating substance use recovery. This role is ideal for someone with lived experience or a strong understanding of recovery principles who is passionate about helping others in a virtual setting.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Peer Support & Counseling

    o Provide empathetic listening and emotional support via phone, video calls, or chat platforms.

    o Share personal recovery experiences (if applicable) to foster connection and hope.

    o Help clients identify goals, strengths, and coping strategies.

    o Encourage engagement with recovery resources and community programs.

    • Resource Navigation

    o Assist individuals in locating relevant services (e.g., treatment centers, support groups, housing, employment).

    o Provide referrals and follow-up support as needed.

    • Documentation & Reporting

    o Maintain confidential session notes and submit weekly activity reports.

    o Report any concerns or incidents to the Program Coordinator promptly.

    • Training & Development

    o Participate in initial and ongoing training sessions on trauma-informed care, active listening, boundaries, and crisis response.

    o Attend virtual team meetings and peer supervision sessions.

    Qualifications

    Outreach & Engagement:

    • Represent the organization at community events, health fairs, and local meetings
    • Build relationships with local organizations, schools, faith groups, and service providers
    • Develop outreach materials (flyers, brochures, social media posts)
    • Coordinate public awareness campaigns around substance use recovery and stigma reduction
    • Track outreach metrics and prepare reports for leadership and funders
    • Lived experience with substance use recovery (preferred but not required).
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
    • Comfortable using virtual communication tools (Zoom, Google Meet, etc.).
    • Need Laptop and reliable internet connection and access to a quiet, private space.
    • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

    Qualifications

    • In a current program or a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Communications, Public Health, or related field
    • Minimum 1 years of experience in volunteer coordination, outreach, or community engagement
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Experience working with individuals in recovery or vulnerable populations
    • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and recovery principles
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms
    • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel locally
    • Passion for community service and equity

    Preferred Skills

    • Familiarity with harm reduction, 12-step, or other recovery models.
    • Experience in peer counseling, social work, or mental health support.
    • Bilingual or multilingual abilities are a plus.
    • Experience working with diverse populations.
    • Conflict resolution and team-building skills.
