    Type: Volunteer

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a youth-centered nonprofit dedicated to supporting students ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, social-emotional learning, academic enrichment, and creative expression, we create safe, consistent, and empowering spaces for young people to grow, thrive, and succeed. We believe every child deserves a promise kept — and we work every day to make that promise real.

    Role Overview

We are seeking a Volunteer HR Policy & Compliance Specialist to help MAP strengthen its human resources systems and ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations and best practices. This role will focus on developing policies, updating HR handbooks, and advising leadership on compliance, equity, and risk management. The ideal candidate has strong HR policy expertise, attention to detail, and a passion for applying professional skills to a mission-driven organization.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Draft, review, and update HR policies, procedures, and employee/volunteer handbooks
    • Ensure compliance with labor laws, nonprofit regulations, and MAP’s internal standards
    • Provide guidance on risk management, equity, and workplace safety
    • Support HR leadership in developing systems for onboarding, training, and recordkeeping
    • Research federal, state, and local employment regulations relevant to nonprofit organizations
    • Collaborate with leadership to align HR policies with MAP’s mission and values
    • Support audits, reporting, and policy-related communications

    Requirements

    • Experience in human resources, compliance, or nonprofit administration
    • Strong knowledge of HR policy development and labor law compliance
    • Excellent organizational, writing, and research skills
    • Ability to translate complex legal/regulatory concepts into clear, accessible policies
    • High attention to detail and discretion when handling sensitive information
    • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and MAP’s mission

    Preferred Skills

    • HR certification (SHRM, HRCI, or equivalent) or law/policy background
    • Experience in nonprofit HR, compliance, or policy development
    • Familiarity with volunteer management and nonprofit HR frameworks
    • Knowledge of DEI practices and trauma-informed workplace approaches

    What You’ll Gain

    • Hands-on experience developing HR policies for a growing nonprofit
    • Opportunities to strengthen expertise in compliance and nonprofit operations
    • Collaboration with a mission-driven leadership and HR team
    • Direct contribution to building an equitable, sustainable HR foundation
    • Letters of recommendation and professional references for future opportunities
