    Position Overview

    The Non-Profit Legal Advisor will provide expert legal counsel to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role will advise leadership and the Board on governance, contracts, risk management, and other legal matters relevant to non-profit operations. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of non-profit law, experience working with charitable organizations, and a passion for advancing social good.

    Key Responsibilities

      • Provide legal advice to leadership and the Board on governance, policies, and compliance.
      • Ensure compliance with IRS regulations, charitable solicitation laws, and state/federal reporting requirements.
      • Guide the organization on employment law, intellectual property, and liability issues.
      • Monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting non-profits and recommend adjustments.
      • Assist in reviewing bylaws, board policies, and organizational documents.
      • Support risk management efforts and advise on legal exposure mitigation.
      • Liaise with external counsel when specialized legal services are required.

    Qualifications

      • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active license to practice law in [Virginia].
      • Minimum [5] years of experience providing legal services, preferably to non-profits or mission-driven organizations.
      • Strong knowledge of non-profit governance, compliance, and IRS regulations.
      • Experience with contract negotiation and organizational risk management.
      • Commitment to the mission and values of Next Step Foundation.

    Preferred Skills

      • Experience with employment law, intellectual property, or tax law for non-profits.
      • Familiarity with grant agreements and donor compliance requirements.
      • Previous experience serving as legal counsel or advisor to a non-profit board.
