    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a youth-centered nonprofit dedicated to supporting students ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, social-emotional learning, academic enrichment, and creative expression, we create safe, consistent, and empowering spaces for young people to grow, thrive, and succeed. We believe every child deserves a promise kept — and we work every day to make that promise real.

    Role Overview

We are seeking Volunteer Mentors to join our community of caring adults who provide guidance, encouragement, and support to students navigating the challenges of housing instability. As a mentor, you will play a vital role in building meaningful relationships, fostering resilience, and helping young people reach their full potential.

This role is ideal for compassionate, reliable individuals who believe in the power of mentorship to transform lives.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Build a consistent and supportive relationship with assigned mentees
    • Provide academic support, social-emotional encouragement, and life skills guidance
    • Participate in regular mentoring sessions (virtual or in-person depending on program)
    • Collaborate with MAP staff to align mentoring with program goals
    • Model positive behaviors, resilience, and problem-solving skills
    • Communicate regularly with program staff about progress and challenges
    • Uphold MAP’s values of equity, compassion, and empowerment in all interactions

    Requirements

    • Commitment to being a consistent, reliable presence for youth
    • Strong communication, listening, and interpersonal skills
    • Compassion, patience, and cultural sensitivity
    • Ability to dedicate consistent weekly time (flexible based on student needs)
    • Willingness to undergo mentor orientation and training
    • Passion for supporting underserved youth and promoting educational equity

    Preferred Skills

    • Experience working with youth, education, or mentoring programs
    • Knowledge of social-emotional learning (SEL) practices
    • Familiarity with challenges related to housing instability or trauma-informed care

    What You’ll Gain

    • The opportunity to make a lasting difference in the life of a young person
    • Hands-on experience supporting youth development in a nonprofit setting
    • Training in mentorship, SEL, and trauma-informed practices
    • Connection with a passionate and mission-driven community of mentors
    • Letters of recommendation and professional references for future opportunities
