Alameda Health System (AHS) has launched a new Canine Visitation Program, which brings certified therapy dogs to its facilities to provide comfort and companionship to patients and staff. This program aims to enhance emotional well-being, reduce stress, and foster healing environments throughout the public health system’s hospitals.
Canine handlers and their dog are required to be certified through the Valley Humane Society.

STEPS TO BECOME AN ALAMEDA HEALTH SYSTEM VOLUNTEER
Step 1: Consider the Commitment
We require a commitment of a minimum of one year and if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to discuss this opportunity in greater detail prior to submiting an application.
Step 2: Submit Application
To apply please visit the AHS website AlamedaHealthSystem.org then click Volunteers on the banner at the top of the page.
Step 3: Interview
We will contact you to setup an interview within a week or two.
Step 4: Orientation
If accepted, you will be invited to attend an orientation covering both hospital and Volunteer Department policies, procedures, and other important information.
Step 5: Health Screening
After the orientation you will be able to make an appointment with AHS Employee Health. Volunteers are required to provide proof of immunity by immunization record or by titer(s) - blood tests for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (chicken-pox). Additionally volunteers are required to show documentation of a tuberculosis skin test (TST) performed elsewhere within the past 12 months and 1 within the past 3 months. AHS Employee Health can provide the second TB test for free.
Step 6: Background Investigation
Volunteers are required to go through a criminal background screening after the Health Screening is completed.
Step 7: Now you can get your badge and start!
