    Support Group Facilitators

    The Alzheimer's Association CA Central Coast Chapter in SLO County is looking for Support Group Facilitators for Caregivers of those caring for a loved one with dementia. Bi-lingual in Spanish is a bonus!

    What does this volunteering position entail?

    Support Group Facilitators create a safe, open environment where people share their feelings, thoughts and experiences in a combined effort to better cope with and manage the shared problems of dementia.

    Support Group Facilitators:

    • Facilitate groups of caregivers (4-15 people) by providing social, educational and emotional support while encouraging interactions of group members.
    • Present pertinent Association materials and information to group members and assure a positive experience for attendees.
    • Connect people with additional Alzheimer's Association or community partner services and volunteer opportunities by proactively making referrals to programs & free 24/7 Helpline.

    The Association is seeking volunteer candidates with:

    • Strong listening and effective communication skills with demonstrated ability to be empathic while separating personal needs from group needs.
    • Ability to redirect and facilitate discussions and fulfill the Facilitator responsibilities as described in the volunteer onboarding.
    • Ability to create and maintain a safe environment where participants’ thoughts and feelings are valued and group members are treated with fairness, equity and respect.
    • Passionate about the Alzheimer’s Association mission.
    • Personal or professional experience with dementia preferred.
    • Must be age 21 to apply. Background checks are required.
    • Be willing to travel in SLO County to facilitate a support group.
    • This is a longer term volunteer opportunity where we anticipate a commitment for at least 12-months.
