    Description

    Basic Literacy Small Group Tutor

Basic Literacy Learners (BLL) are (mostly) English speaking, American born adults who struggle with deficiencies in reading, writing, spelling, and/or comprehension. These students either weren’t afforded the appropriate chances to be educated or had undiagnosed learning disabilities as children that prohibited them from keeping up in school. We offer phonics-based small group instruction using the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach to teach BL students how to decode and encode words more efficiently. Opportunity welcomes creativity and initiative! Volunteers work closely with student's identified goals, which can range from obtaining a job, studying for citizenship, or even reading a bedtime story to a grandchild. No previous experience necessary. Groups meet at various libraries throughout Nassau County. If we don't have a student in your area, you may have to travel to a surrounding library. (Total: 3 hour per week commitment)
