    Description

    The Shaker Historical Society is seeking hands-on volunteers to assist with event set-up, activities, and event clean-up for AppleFest, our annual family-friendly autumn festival.

    Available Positions:

    SET UP (9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.)

    • Set up event materials, including 6-foot tables, folding chairs, tents, and table coverings
    • Assist with preparation of activity stations and partner demonstration areas
    • Follow directions from event staff to ensure safe and efficient set-up
    • This position involves tasks that may require lifting and moving items weighing up to 25 pounds, as well as extended periods of walking and standing.

    WELCOME STATION (Shift 1: 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Shift 2: 1:45 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.)

    • Greet visitors warmly and provide general event information and schedules
    • Answer questions and direct guests to activities, restrooms, and other amenities
    • Monitor the welcome station area to ensure it remains organized and stocked with materials
    • Communicate any visitor concerns or issues to staff promptly and professionally

    ACTIVITY LEAD (Shift 1: 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Shift 2: 1:45 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.)

    • Lead and oversee a specific activity and/or craft (training provided)
    • Provide clear instructions and demonstrations to participants of all ages
    • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all activity participants
    • Monitor supplies and request restocking from staff or coordinators as needed
    • Oversee clean-up and resetting the activity space between participant groups

    TOUR GUIDE (Shift 1: 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., Shift 2: 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.)

    • Lead an engaging and informative half-mile walking tour that highlights local history, landmarks, and points of interest (training provided)
    • Communicate clearly and confidently to groups of various sizes and ages
    • Ensure the safety and comfort of participants by setting an appropriate walking pace and watching for potential hazards
    • Answer questions and foster friendly, interactive discussions with attendees

    FOOD/DRINK STATION (Shift 1: 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Shift 2: 1:45 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.)

    • Greet customers and take orders for food and/or beverages in a friendly and efficient manner
    • Handle sales transactions accurately, including cash and card payments (training provided)
    • Serve food and beverages in accordance with safety and hygiene guidelines
    • Monitor inventory levels and restock items as needed or notify staff when supplies run low
    • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work area

    CLEAN UP (3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.)

    • Assist with breaking down and packing up event materials, including tables, chairs, and tents
    • Help collect and properly dispose of trash, recycling, and other waste from event areas
    • Ensure event spaces are left clean, organized, and free of debris
    • This position involves tasks that may require lifting and moving items weighing up to 25 pounds, as well as extended periods of walking and standing.

    General Qualifications:

    • Interest in history, museums, culture, and/or public engagement
    • Friendly and approachable demeanor with a desire to create a welcoming and positive environment for visitors of all ages
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with guests, staff, and fellow volunteers
    • Dependable, self-motivated, and able to work independently or with a team
    • Commitment to safety and professionalism, including handling materials, money, or equipment responsibly
    • May be required to pass a background check
