    Disaster Health Services Volunteer

    Position Overview:

    This position supports the Regional Disaster Cycle Services department. Disaster Health Services Responders provide disaster health care by meeting the disaster related health needs of clients and providing support to other volunteers.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Participation in chapter preparedness activities
    2. Support to the DAT response, shelter operations, emergency aid stations, outreach activities, and casework and recovery planning during a disaster relief operation.

    Below are the basic requirements for a new volunteer to become a Red Cross Disaster Health Services responder. If you meet the requirements, please consider volunteering with the Red Cross!!

    Basic Eligibility Criteria: Current, active, and unencumbered licensure or certification for the following healthcare professionals:

    • Registered Nurse
    • Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse
    • Nurse Practitioner
    • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
    • Certified Nursing Assistant
    • Medical Doctor
    • Doctor of Osteopathy
    • Emergency Medical Technician
    • Paramedic
    • Physician Assistant

    Important to Note:

    1. Retired licenses can be recognized as active and unencumbered if the state issuing the license does not curtail the scope of practice of the individual.
    2. Only Registered Nurses have full scope of practice as a Red Cross volunteer. Prescriptive authority as held by physicians and advanced practice nurses cannot be utilized when acting as a Red Cross volunteer.
    3. CNAs may participate in local shelter settings under the direct supervision of an RN. Healthcare students may participate in a local shelter setting, during preparedness or readiness activities under direct RN supervision.
