    Description

    In-School Writers' Rooms Support

Over the course of a school year, the Writers’ Room will serve every student in the school through whole-class visits, individual writing assistance, and/or after-school extracurricular activities.

At the start of each shift, tutors participate in a fifteen minute pre-brief with an 826 Boston team member, who will answer any questions and conduct a mini training on a relevant topic. Then, volunteers support students across all subjects with a primary focus on writing, self expression, and what guidelines have been set by the teacher. After the shift has finished, an 826 team member will lead a debrief where tutors can share successes, challenges, and tips before leaving with next steps.

We encourage tutors of all backgrounds to apply, and we especially seek volunteers who identify as Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, Latinx, LGBTQ+, and/or multi-lingual so that our volunteers are more representative of the students we serve.

826 Boston is a nonprofit writing, tutoring, and publishing organization where students grades K-12 and beyond can share their stories, amplify their voices, and develop as leaders in school and in life. We currently host an 826 Boston Writers’ Room at six Boston Public Schools locations: the John D O’Bryant School for Mathematics and Science, the Boston Teachers Union K-8 Pilot School, the Dr. Albert D. Holland High School, New Mission High School, The Margarita Muñiz Dual Language Academy, and the Boston International Newcomers Academy.

These shifts are one to two hours long, and they run anywhere from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Monday through Thursday. If you are interested, please send an email to volunteer@826boston.org. We will be in touch with next steps.
