Time Commitment: Wednesdays, 6:15-8:00 PM (during the school year and summer)

      Description:

The Kids’ Learning Club at The Brooks provides a welcoming space for children in grades Pre-K through 6th to receive extra academic and enrichment support while their families transition through temporary housing. Volunteers are essential to creating a fun, educational environment through reading, games, arts and crafts, and homework help (when applicable).

We are especially encouraging teachers on summer break to apply, but the opportunity is open to anyone who enjoys working with children and has a heart for learning.

      What You’ll Do:

      • Read with children and support literacy development

      • Help with homework when needed

      • Lead educational games, crafts, and learning-based activities

      • Engage with children ages 3-12, including those with learning or behavioral differences

      • Collaborate with other volunteers and staff to coordinate activities

      Requirements:

All volunteers must complete a background check process, which includes:

      • Submit a valid, color copy of a government-issued photo ID

      • TB screening (Mantoux tuberculin skin test within the past 12 months)

      • National Sex Offender Registry check (completed by Friendship Place)

      • DC-MPD Criminal History Report (10-year conviction history; $7 fee)

      • CPR/First Aid Certification (support available if not already certified)

      • Drug/Alcohol Screening (instructions provided after ID submission)

      • FBI Background Check (fingerprinting; instructions provided)

      • Child Protection Register (CPR) Check (verifies no record of abuse/neglect in DC)

      • Strong communicators who are patient and adaptable

      • Individuals who enjoy working with energetic children in group settings

      • Volunteers who are comfortable supporting diverse learning needs
