    Description

    Intern in Ghana with St. Miracle Works Educational Foundation Optometry program. The level of visual impairment and blindness in rural Ghana is very high. There are many more optometrists attending to many people suffering in this illness in Ghana. Contributing to optical care in Ghana especially in rural and semi-rural communities are often inadequate number of qualified practioners, lack of optical facilities, lack of awareness of eye and inadequate optical educational opportunities which has contributed to the reduction in social, economic and health related issues in the country.

    This Optical Internship program is designed to help international students who have passion and interest in Optometry and Opthalmology with the desire to assist in improving the current situation in Ghana. We have partnership with both rural and semi-rural eye clinic in the country.

    Volunteers and interns will be involved with healthcare aspect of Optometry. Integral to the internship will be communication and interaction with the community, promoting health, and disseminating health related information.

    Specifically, volunteers and interns will work with both government and private Optical Centres in the country in the following areas:

    Intern & Volunteer Task Involves:

    1. Using specialists equipment for diagnosis and testing
    2. Issuing prescriptions for spectacles or contact lenses
    3. Fitting and checking prescribed lenses in order to correct vision defects
    4. Laising with other medical practitioners and sometimes sharing the care of patients with chronic ophthalmic conditions.
    5. Offering advice and help to patience choosing frames and lenses
    6. Checking of signs and symptoms of general health conditions
    7. Examining the eyes of patients of all ages to detect signs of injury, disease, abnormality etc.

    In addition, interns and volunteers with education and/or experience in the field of optometry and ophthalmology may assist in the following administrative tasks including:

    1. Managing staff, including dispensing opticians and clerical staff
    2. Supervising and training junior staff
    3. Managing the retail aspects of spectacles, contact lenses, and other vision care products.
    4. Administering, organizing and planning the development of the practice
    5. Liaising with sales representatives from vision care product supplies

    This Optometry Internship and Volunteer program available throughout the year with flexible start dates. Interns and volunteers will work both in rural and semi-rural communities in Ghana. This program is suitable for students, pre medics and medical volunteers.

    Volunteer Requirements:

    1. Volunteers on this program must be 18 years and above on the program start date and duration.
    2. Volunteers on this program must be fluent in English to be able to communicate with the local people and must come along with bundle of energy.
    3. Volunteers on this program must have at least a high school educational background.

    No prior requirement is required for this program but Medical placement volunteers must have relevant medical training and certification.

    Volunteers must be able to adapt to the environment and be flexible to learn and experience the culture in Ghana.
