Star Durable Pads began in April 2017, in response to an urgent need for menstrual hygiene materials for girls and women here in Uganda. Currently in Uganda there is inadequate access to knowledge on menstruation, as well as social stigmas which associate shame and secrecy with menstruation.
Lack of access to menstrual sanitation products has been linked with girls missing or dropping out of school, and women missing work, limiting their life choices and decision-making power. Improving the accessibility of menstrual hygiene products and empowering women to take control of their menstrual cycles is thus essential for achieving social equality.
