    Description

Director of Development — Volunteer Role

    Overview

Fruitslice is seeking a passionate, strategic, and community-minded Director of Development to join our volunteer leadership team. This is a high-level role focused on strategy, vision, and oversight — guiding and supporting our existing development team.

We know this could easily be a full-time position, and we want to be clear: this is a self-paced, flexible volunteer role. We are not expecting someone to do everything at once. Instead, we’re looking for someone who can provide steady guidance, shape big-picture strategy, and maintain communication and consistency in a way that aligns with and honors their capacity.

If you’re excited about building sustainable growth for a Queer publication and leading a team that’s already doing great work, we’d love to hear from you.

    Responsibilities

    The Director of Development will:

    Strategic Development & Growth

    • Lead Fruitslice’s overall development strategy to ensure sustainable funding and organizational growth.
    • Develop and refine our business plan in alignment with our mission and goals.
    • Make recommendations on resource allocation and priorities across departments.

    Revenue Streams & Fundraising

    • Build out, oversee, and diversify revenue streams (individual donations, merch, events, subscriptions, contests, paid content).
    • Design and oversee fundraising campaigns and donor drives.
    • Guide donor solicitation, engagement, and stewardship strategies.

    Grants & Reporting

    • Supervise and support the grant writing and management team.

    Marketing & Communications

    • Oversee Fruitslice’s newsletter and marketing strategies to align with development goals.
    • Collaborate with the social media team to ensure campaigns support fundraising and visibility efforts.

    Distribution & Sales

    • Provide oversight on our distribution strategy, including wholesale, consignment, and direct sales.
    • Support digital and print distribution partnerships.

    Operations & Oversight

    • Oversee and guide our accountant and bookkeeper to ensure transparency and accuracy.

    What We’re Looking For

    • Someone passionate about Fruitslice’s mission and excited to contribute at a strategic, high-level capacity.
    • Experience in nonprofit development, fundraising, or business strategy (literary publishing experience is a plus but not required).
    • A clear communicator who can support and guide a team without needing to take on every task directly.
    • Someone comfortable moving at a sustainable, self-directed pace.

We ask for consistency and communication, not perfection or immediate action on every front.

This is a volunteer role. Priority is given to QTPOC individuals and people from other intersectional and historically marginalized communities. We recognize that unpaid creative work can be exploitative—and we actively work to push back against that.

We aim to make all roles at Fruitslice collaborative, flexible, and nourishing. In addition to being part of a deeply passionate team where your voice will be genuinely valued, you’ll have access to professional development support, an active peer community, and internal mutual aid resources. We believe in resourcing each other however we can.

We can’t wait to meet you.
